Also check to see the vacuum can advance is working correctly. 67CamaroRS/SS May 19th, 09, 06:49 AM If it's the original points that came with the car, then they are probably due for a changing. Along with that, do as Skip suggests and check the dwell. Points wear. Every time they open and close, a little bit of the contact point wears away until the gap is too large. TJS69 May 19th, 09, 08:57 AM It may just be bad gas and it has you thinking points. Real canadian67 May 19th, 09, 02:20 PM tanks charlie is the dwell the thing that slids up,do you turn that with a screw driver to set your points:confused: TJS69 May 19th, 09, 04:13 PM By thing that slides up... you mean to open the window on your points style distributer, then yes and no. You open that window and use an allen wrench to set the points opening. You need a dwell meter that you can watch as you adjust it to spec. Real canadian67 May 19th, 09, 05:00 PM thanks tom. do you know the spec for my engine,327 2bbl,2speed p.glide.THANKS again gary p. Vegas69 May 19th, 09, 05:09 PM Sounds pretty good for a set of points.:D TJS69 May 19th, 09, 10:15 PM Here is a chart that I found on the web. I will check if the specs are in my '69 owner's manual on 5/20. http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii152/tjs69_photos/Pointgapanddwell.jpg novaderrik May 19th, 09, 10:25 PM don't they have a dwell spec on the tuneup sticker under the hood? deerhunter May 20th, 09, 08:10 AM Point gap and dwell are directly related. Setting the gap with a feeler guage will get you close but setting the dwell with a dwell meter will get you right on. Chevy has the little window and you can set the dwell with the engine running or not but cars like Ford didn't have the window. You have to set the dwell with the cap off. As points wear, they develop little 'tits' on the point face. You can remove them with a point file before adjusting them but I only like to do that if I can't find a new set. dubs68camaro May 20th, 09, 08:13 AM I just had to read this thread......from the title, I thought it was a beer drinking contest. TJS69 May 20th, 09, 11:01 AM When was the "tune up" sticker put on Camaro's ? Anyone know ? fatblock May 20th, 09, 06:27 PM Ever thought of having a buddy brake torque the engine while you view underhood in the dark for any secondary ignition shorts to ground? You also can LIGHTLY mist the cap and wires and coil tower with water if nec. Not likely worn points if that intermittent. There is stutter/sputter/misfire/hesitation/bog/backfire etc. Can you supply some more info..example..only under load vs steady state cruise? Real canadian67 May 21st, 09, 07:48 PM under load going up a hill ??? Skeeter55 May 21st, 09, 07:58 PM Vacuum advance not working.. |
