View Full Version : Gear Drive
Prostreetcamaro1 Apr 16th, 03, 09:43 AM Hi, I am just wondering how loud exactly the "Noisy" timing gear drives are... I am looking for a Supercharger type whine sound, I have a flex-fan on my motor now, and it has a nice Whurring sound, but I need a "Geary" sound... Will a gear drive sound like a supercharger???
Thanks!!!
Novaguy73 Apr 16th, 03, 10:29 AM well my pete jackson noisy almost overpowered the sound of my 350 with a 292/300 235/245@ .050 herbert cam out 1 7/8" headers through a 3"exaust You could dang near hear the gear drive before my motor according to bystanders, i wouldnt get the noisy gear drive unless your running a wicked cam thats gonna make alot of noise. I know a guy that took his out because it got annoying. Im going to try mine with my new combo and if its still too loud ill sell it to ya smile.gif
Silver69Camaro Apr 16th, 03, 10:34 AM I had the quiet gear drive, and it was fairly loud. The noisy ones do have a supercharger whine. Personally, I thought my gear drive was cool for about one week, then it got very annoying.
Now that I'm studying Mechanical Engineering, I learned alot about these gear drives that the manufacturer doesn't tell you. These things are terrible when it comes to harmonics and vibrations...and the noisy ones are even worse. They are also inefficient (more frictional loss).
I only know this much for the dual idler drives (Pete Jackson & Edelbrock), I don't know about the single-idler (more expensive units).
1 2RUN Apr 16th, 03, 10:58 AM I let my friend talk me into putting a noisy Pete Jackson in his 396 Chevelle. Even with a very loud chambered exhaust all you here is whining until he's moving away from you. I hate it. When I was setting up the engine I had to walk behind the car to hear how it was running. Soon putting a 461 in it with a hydraulic roller cam and absolutely no gear drive. It's true what they say about the crank harmonics being transmitted through the gears to the cam.
Prostreetcamaro1 Apr 16th, 03, 02:35 PM well, I want the car to be annoying sounding... kinda like a blower.... I want to be coming down the road and people go "Damn, That's a supercharged car"Iam running a Comp Cams Magnum 280H with shorty Hooker headers, and true dual (Not Cat Back!!!) Flowmaster 40 series on an 84 camaro... all bolted to a 355 chevy small block... Still building the motor, is why I wanted to know about the gear now... so I know wheather to put one in there or not... I think I will... just to see what it's like... lol... By the way it's a Pete Jackson Brand...
Thanks!!!
prostreet L-78 Apr 16th, 03, 02:54 PM I`ve got a dynagear noisy gear drive in my 355, Lunati solid roller, 245/245 @ .050, .555 lift. 2-1/2" exhaust with X pipe and dynomax ultra flows. I would say overall the sound is well balanced. The solid lifters can be heard as much as the gear drive and the exhaust is slightly louder than the valvetrain. As far as performance, I ran a Manley true roller chain prior to doing the gear drive and it made no difference in the ET or MPH. I have read plenty of information on harmonics and don`t know whether to buy it or not, but it didn`t affect my combo one bit. Brent
czar Apr 17th, 03, 07:06 AM prostreet,
i have a black '72 w/350HO/380HP crate w/vortecs, 268xe & the loud pete jackson....edel, holley, flowtechs, flows, hellwig, koni 3.42 posi etc....this is my 3rd drive train in this car.
i've wanted that loud, annoying gear drive sound since i had the original motor but stuck w/the cloyes chain......however, this time, i elected to do what i wanted, not the right or better thing to do.........NO REGRETS!!!! my camaro is so loud & obnoxious, ya can hear it blocks away.....peoples heads ALWAYS turn either in disgust or in aw......then they can read my ITSPUMT plates and dismiss my car!
i was at "hot august nights" this year.....quite frankly, the cars w/blowers were not as loud as the gear drive.....if ya just want it...get it. forget everybody else's opinion.

kinzli Apr 17th, 03, 08:10 AM The noisy ones are very noisy, no question. If your car is one that you drive for fun, rather than driving to work every day, then I'd say sure, it's a fun addition. The downside is when you leave your house at 5AM you wake up all the neighbors who don't think a loud gear drive is so cool smile.gif
I have one in my motor, but honestly I can't hear it. The supercharger whine in my motor isn't that loud either, but the exhaust and motor make a whole lot more noise. This is in a 1:1 6-71 blown 454 with fully-plumbed exhaust.
YMMV, but I agree with some of the others, if you want it, go for it, if you hate it after a week or 3, then take it out and put a chain back in, it's not that expensive or difficult, and you can always sell the gear drive on the bay smile.gif
stingr69 Apr 17th, 03, 08:20 AM I have one in my spare engine. When I ran it years ago, it sounded like a power steering pump that was low on fluid. Hope this helps.

Joe G Apr 17th, 03, 09:02 AM It will be noisy, but won't sound like a supercharger. It will sound like a gear drive. Anyone that knows anything automotive will recognize the sound. The others won't have a clue what it is anyway.

angelglo Apr 17th, 03, 10:31 AM prostreet. maybe you should just get a blower. a nice 8-71 sticking out of the hood is a lot cooler than a very noisy gear drive. when its parked, it still has that wow factor.

gheatly Apr 17th, 03, 11:46 AM I agree with angelglo. From experience, when people "not in the know" hear the whine, they expect either a blower or a gear drive. In my case, its hard to tell because I have a centrifugal that does not stick out of the hood. It's nice to be able to pop the hood and not disappoint.
Knowleageable people usually say "pop the hood, I want to see your blower"
kool Apr 17th, 03, 04:53 PM I've got the "Pete Jackson" in my car. It's the noisy one and I love it.I used the car as a daily driver, though I shouldn't have. It is a little too modified for a daily driver. The only down side is ,if you have engine problems, you can't really hear where it's coming.
Prostreetcamaro1 Apr 18th, 03, 01:20 AM yea, I think it's atleast worth a try... I like drawing attention anyways... I have heard some cars at Turkey Rod run last year that you could've sworn that they had a blower, then they would park and lift their hood, and it was just their gear drive... this is what origionally made me want to get one... Everyone would turn their heads and go, oh that car has a centrifugal supercharger under it's hood... I was thinking since I have a 5" cowl hood, I would just say it's a 144 powercharger... lol... Just for the "Damn" factor... by the way, who's all going to the turkey run this year??? I'll be there... hopefully have the new motor in, new rims and tires, and new paint job by then.... it's sometime in November, but I can't remember when... anyone remember the exact date???
