Drag67Camaro Aug 23rd, 04, 08:44 AM hey i was wondering if you could reccommed a mild BB combo for my 454 2 bolt block
Stall im hoping for around 3000 or less
gear is 3.90
mostly street driving and some strip use
RPM intake, iron heads -206,-215's , 049s or anything with a solid FT cam
Thanks !
Adam
67RS502 Aug 23rd, 04, 08:55 AM What kinda et/mph do you wanna run?
Eric68 Aug 23rd, 04, 11:23 AM I'd love to give you some specific ideas, but I know a fair amount more about SBCs really -- I don't claim to be a BBC expert.
From what I've seen others do though I can say - 1. the RPM manifold seems to clearly be the choice with the BBC unless you really plan on spinning it. 2. I know the #215 semi-closed chambers seem to be a pretty popular head if you want factory iron heads. If you want aftermarket aluminum heads the Canfield 310's seem to be the ticket.
Based on your head selection, you will want a piston that makes 10:1 with an iron head or closer to 11:1 with aluminum heads. Then you can pick a cam that matches the CR and stall you want. Probably something right about 255/260 on a 110* LSA would do nicely with the CR I mentioned above.
Just some general ideas -- maybe some of the BBC experts will chime in.
pdq67 Aug 23rd, 04, 01:14 PM OK,
I will suggest a 9.5 to a schosh under 10 to 1 CR. BB motor.
For new heads, cast-iron Merlin ovals are not bad at at all if you can go the price. Otherwise, the Canfield 310's are good value for aluminum heads, imho.. Not the best and not the highest priced value-wise...
Or go with said closed chamber ovals. (And, imho, they really don't have to have big valves added if you do a good bowl blend and port cleanup on them for a mild street motor)..
An E-brock RPM and a good old fashioned 750/780 Holley 3310-1, -2 carb.
A set of inexpensive 1.75" four tube, long headers.
Cam: I am a solid cam guy and like the good old CC 282S but I do know to each his own, but the big thing is to try to use one in the street duration/compression range for pump gas usage.
I figure you are looking at say 510 hp at 5500rpm and say, 540 t at 4000rpm so should be a dandy street motor if she comes within 5 percent of the numbers mentioned...
With big valve oval heads, 9.5 CR, open headers and a 750.
I made my about 9.8 CR. 496 just like this, (New Merlins and all but with a Strip Dom. single plane), and D2K says 550hp at 5500rpm and 580 t at 4500 rpm for between $3800 and $4000...
He, He!! I just call her my great big "tow-truck" motor!!

Drag67Camaro Aug 23rd, 04, 06:12 PM Thanks guys, I would like to get some used iron closed ovals, new heads can be pricey, I would like 11.50's on a good day with good tuning, as for the bottom end I was looking at OhioCrank.com they have some nice setups, only 550$ for a forged crank and around $475 for H beam rods forged also, i would like to order those after my next couple paychecks, then get the pistons after i get my heads, As for a cam i was looking at the 282s with a 1.6 or 1.7 rocker? the 294s seemed radical but im new to BB and i dont know how it would act in one, thanks for the help, those numbers look good, you guys know a good place to get those heads? the -215 is the last 3 numbers in that whole 38483938215 thing right?, thats just an example not correct, i do plan a cage this winter because 11s are way faster than 13s and i'd like to be safe!
thanks again guys!

Matt R Aug 24th, 04, 02:18 AM Even the open chamber large ovals run good. The 781 castings or the 049 castings work very well. My brother has a 71 chevelle with a BSE 454 and runs 11.85-11.90 all day long on pump gas. This is with 781 heads a hyd. cam, 10-1 compression. Very Very mild motor.....tons of torque. I have Ed's recipe if anyone wants it.
Matt
phel69 Aug 24th, 04, 02:25 AM I have 781s and 10.3:1 compresson. It runs fine on 93 with no detonation . I run 15* initial and 35* total all in by 28-3000 rpm. I think that head and piston choice largely depend on what you can find for the best price whether it is open or close chamber. I also have my 396 closed chamber 10.3:1. It also runs fine on 93 with a 220* dur .510 lift hyd cam.
67RS502 Aug 24th, 04, 03:52 AM If mid 11s are your goal, then shoot for around 475hp, (assuming your car is around 3500lbs)
which isnt too hard to do with a 454. A mild cam will do the trick and will be pretty streetable,
a set of oval ports with 2.19/1.88s and some mild bowl work. If youre gonna use the 215 castings
unshround for bigger valves. An rpm intake would work well, with a HP950. Actually this setup
should make over 500hp easy, but its always nice to make more then needed. Dont get too
crazy with the cam, as there's no need, and it will be almost smooth idle and very responsive
off idle.
pdq67 Aug 24th, 04, 12:29 PM He, He!!
Yes, or just copy Ed's "BSE" motor for a really quick/fast street motor!!

Drag67Camaro Aug 24th, 04, 01:07 PM Thanks! where is a good place to get some heads? Ive looked around swap meets but they seem to be dead this year!
Adam
Drag67Camaro Aug 24th, 04, 02:00 PM I am picking up another 454 block, this one is a 4 bolt! I am gonna sell or trade off the 2 bolt with its crank/rods/pistons...the guy also now has iron/aluminum GM heads, i will post the castings once he gets them to me and we can decide which ones to get, one of the blocks he sold was an LS-6...thanks!
Adam
pdq67 Aug 24th, 04, 03:31 PM Two bolt, BB's are fine and if you get nervous, just add a "two-stud" main stud kit to it and be put at ease..
I did my 496 this way for a little extra insurance....

PS., Competition Products have good prices on alotta stuff, (heads too).....

Eric68 Aug 25th, 04, 02:57 PM Speaking of your 496 Paul . . . I just have to hassel you and ask you when the heck is that puppy gonna be on the road ????????????? ;)
40Coupe Aug 25th, 04, 03:56 PM His 496 will be rusted over and growing stalagmites before it ever gets in a car. Problem is with something like 10,000 posts all over the net he's never off his butt long enough to do any wrenchin'. :D
Just kiddin' ya Paul.

phel69 Aug 25th, 04, 04:45 PM Maybe if he put a keyboard under the Camaro hood he could get to work. We should start a pool and try to guess what year he will finally get it done. I hope that we still have fossil fuel by then. tongue.gif
pdq67 Aug 26th, 04, 03:09 AM Eric,
And I rightly deserve the ribbing!!
I have another buddy's, buddy's, "Cherry-picker" in the garage so it's going in this weekend, believe it or not!
I gotta degrease my bellhousing and I finally bought p/p bolts and onna them el-cheapo plastic tranny input shaft things last Sunday so am about ready to "get it done"!!!
Travis is coming up from Jefferson City for a visit tomorrorow evening so we will get to meet and jaw a bunch about our hobby...
Thinking out loud???
I'm kinda wondering how much I'm going to have to ding my BB PN-68190 Hedman hedders, (1.75" tube), by the steering gearbox??

Eric68 Aug 26th, 04, 08:44 AM OMG !!! :D its going in finally !!! Be carefull though, I've talked to Travis on the phone before and he might just slow you down LOL (j/k Travis).
Anyway, good luck Paul, it will be great to hear from you when you fire this beast up . . . or is that the project for next decade? LOL ;)
Maybe if you get stuck, I could just walk down to MO and help you out tongue.gif
Sorry Paul, just funnin' with ya ;) I honestly do wish you the best of luck getting your "tow truck motor" fired up!
ps. Garret and Phel69 -- that was funny :D
