I just bought a '69 SS396, TH400. The past owners all say the trans is the original and I am sure it probably is but I can't find any ID numbers on it! McNiesh and Hooper all say RH side but no pics for reference. I have looked with light, mirror and rag I cant find anything. Where EXACTLY are they? Are they stamped in the cast like a Muncie 4-spd or on a metal tag or ? Any help would be appreciated!!

There should be a small metal tag riveted to the RH side of the trans several inches back from where the dipstick tube enters the case. Look for the cast-in ribs on the case. It is common for rebuilders to remove the tag.

VIN stamps are often found on the LH lip of the bellhousing. If it is there you should be able to see it behind the LH cylinder head.

I was going to say you have too many Camaros for one person, but then decided there is no such thing!! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

look on the passenger side where the tailshaft meets the the housing. Your VIN should be stamped there.

Thanks for the help guys! The previous owner had the trans rebuilt at a shop so the tag appears to be gone. Will check for the VIN where you suggested William. Joe G, you are correct, there is no such thing as too many Camaro's. Camaroguy, I think you are refering to VIN location on a manual trans. I know where to find those numbers as all my other '69's have been 4-spd cars.

Nope. I have had many that were located in that position as well as the Muncies. Good luck.
