View Full Version : Best fitting headers for 396 camaro?
4406brl May 30th, 09, 04:16 PM I need to order a set of headers for a 69 396 camaro and was trying to find out if any brand fits better than others?
Car is 4-speed power steering car.
I was lokking at the hooker coated ones but do not want to start dinging them in. Thanks
rad454 May 30th, 09, 04:38 PM I have your answer my brother. After hounding the Guru's here for the very answer your looking for, here is what works:
Be sure to buy the Big Block motor stands,
Use the Energy suspension BB motor mounts, they look great and...they look great,
Under the drivers side motor where it meets the engine, put in 2 flat washers on each of the 3 mounting holes,
Buy a set of Hooker 2457's, preferrebly with MTCB
Help the next guy who inevitebly will run into this problem and ask for help.
Plenty of clearance around the Sag box, passenger side is a breeze, lots of ground clearance.
I pass the torch to you.
Tom P May 30th, 09, 08:06 PM x2 for the Hooker 2457's
with AGR PS box...
If you have factory fuel lines on the inside of the passenger side frame rail those will need to be moved to the top of the frame rail - I converted to braided using Earls fittings and got them out of the way.

Check the numbers stamped on the frame mounts
correct mounts for a '69 396 should be:
3950113, 3950114
The headers will be close to the steering box, test fit, you may be OK; if not sliding a few washers between the block and the mount will provide clearance between the header tube and box.

rad454 May 31st, 09, 06:35 PM I think I took Tom's advice and used the 2 washer trick. My Headers cleared the PS box but only by about 1/8 inch. If the engine torqued some, they might make contact so I put in the washers and it raised that side by about 1/2 inch. Plenty of clearance now.
If you look close at the PS box, you will notice a 7/16 head bolt holding the top cover on. That also helped with a little extra clearance. The bolt I used is a header bolt that came with the 2457's.
IDS_Bill Jun 2nd, 09, 02:21 PM I have repro BB motor mounts (with offset), 4 Speed and Hedman Long Headers from Summit HED-68190 and they fit perfectly.

Before you order I have a set that I think are the same part # on my 68 camaro with a 396. ( I know they are ceramic coated and are Hooker) They were new when I installed them less than year ago on my car and decided then to restore the car. I decided to go back with manifolds on my car and dont need these now. PM me if interested and I will check the part# by the way my car does have power steering.
