I had a 68 Camaro SS. I sold it in 1972. I have the numnber of the original California (black) plate. I do not have the VIN. I would like to find this car if it still exists. Can anyone give me advice on how to find this car? This is the first time I have ever used a chat service so I don't know what I am doing. I am open to any advice I get.

First off, welcome, where in WI are you from? I think for starters, you would probably have to see if the DMV in California has any record on what the plate was licensed to in order to get a VIN number, otherwise maybe the name of the person you sold it to??? Not sure that your search will turn up much without some more information about the car.

Jerry, welcome to the site, what part of WI are you in? I live in River Falls near the border w/MN.
I've also been looking for a '68 RS I used to own back around 1980. Even with the VIN number, I have been unable to locate the car. I've been told that by paying for records I might be able to find it, but I haven't gone that route...

Any additional info you could come up with might help: where was it originally purchased? Name of the person who sold it to you or the person who you sold it to? Location? detailed description of the car? Posting a photo might just make someone remember-- though since you sold it in 1972, some 37 years ago, it might be a long shot by now....having the CA black plate might be the key...good luck!

Can you give us more info on the car? Color of paint, size of motor, trans, where you had the car, etc would be great for starters. Plate # would be good too. Who knows, someone with the car and plate may google the plate number.

I have a 68 SS that I bought in California and I have tried everything to locate the original owner with no luck.

In my search I found that you can get some information from CA DMV with respect to the current owner. I would be happy to send you what I have, just send me a private message or give me your email. I think it was only $25.00. I still have the black plates and with this I was able to get the current owner. Did not do much good in my case because the information was not provided on previous owners. However, in your case it would tell you when the last registration was and who it belongs (belonged) to. CA is REAL strict with this information. The REAL kicker is you must agree NOT to contact the current owner once you get the information. I believe that they even send the owner a notice that someone retrieved this information as the guy I bought the car from in 2001 mentioned that he received a letter. So, you have to be a little careful with this.

Thank you for the reply and welcome. I really don't know how to use this site very well but, will see what I can do. I have several old photos of my car and will have to scan them into my computer and then post them as you suggest. I will also post CA Black plate number (VSD 862) right now. I live in Cumberland about 70 miles for River Falls. The car I had was fitted from the factory (or a dealer) with traction master bars under the rear end, headders, had a 350 with a Muncie 4 speed and 410 rear end. Had the mag wheels you see on alot of the car of that era and was a blast to drive.
I will let you know how I do. Jerry
