I'm hoping someone out there can give me an approximate correct measurement between the ends of the steering column shaft and the power steering gear for '68 RS Vert with a 327. I'm replacing the steering gear that blew out with the same type that was in it when I bought it (AGR quick ratio) and the gap between the two shafts is approximately 3/8 inch. I'm trying to eliminate the rag joint and upgrade to a Borgenson's u-joint, but there is no way it's even close to fitting (I need at least another inch between the two).
I haven't had the car long, and in speaking with the previous owner he said this is the 4th steering gear to go in the car in 9 years. He also said he had replaced the original stock steering column with the tilt column that's in it early in his ownership and before the gears started to fail.
Now I can't get the new gear in without REALLY forcing it. This is with using the old rag joint that came out of it, which was really tight to begin with. I bought the Borgeson's u-joint upon a recommendation from AGR and after a new, thicker rag I had planned on installing wouldn't fit at all (too tight). Now I'm wondering if the pressure between the two is causing the failures of the steering gears. Any thoughts? Can the steering column be adjusted, shortened, or ???
All help is very much appreciated, and the winning response gets a cold 6-pack of their favorite beverage!:beers:
Thanks guys!
