We had a new ignition lock cyclinder installed in the steering column of the 69. Since then I can't remove the key or start the car unless I turn the column while turning the key. This was once a column shift car and is now a console car. What do I need to do so i can hop in the car and turn the key instead of playing twist games?? Do i need to install new lock cylinder, or purchase a new column or ez fix? thanks:o

The lock out rod between the trans mission and column is missing. It holds the collar up when in the park position so the key will turn back and can be removed. For a quick fix use bailing wire to hold the lever at the bottom of the column up.

As suggested, replace the rod from the column to trans to unlock the key from the ign tumbler when Park is selected.

x2 From the factory there is a reverse lock out linkage that goes from the transmission to a bellcrank, and then another rod from the bellcrank to the steering column. This linkage set will fix your problem, or just wire it up like Jeff said.

I had that problem I twisted the collar into the position where I could remove the key, then used a piece of clear packing tape and taped it to the stationary part of the column on the underside of the column where it's out of sight.

If you are interested here is a link to a paper on the General Motors Steering Column/Transmission Shift Interlock system.

The system was devised to prevent anyone from locking their steering wheel while moving straight ahead. Be aware that by wiring your lower lever on the steering column in the full up position, you will be able to turn off your engine, remove your ignition key, and lock your steering wheel even while moving down the road.
You may ask, "Who would do such a stupid thing?" General Motors was very afraid of lawsuits from people who might just do that stupid thing.
