Hey guys just have a question on auctions.I was just watching a rerun of wrecks to riches with a 71 Torino going to the Russo & Steele auction.Barry White had the car at No Reseve it sold for $33,000 at No Reseve then he buys the car back by paying some kind of fees.I dont get it,Because the sale price was to low he has a chance to buy it back?I thought that was what every buyer wants to buy at lowest price. What about the highest bidder.Just trying to understand the game I guess you could call it. Thanks Irvin

To me this show is a joke. Barry White acts like an a**hole on the show and so does the prick that orders all of his parts. It is so rigged. It seems the same guy buys Barry's cars at all of the auctions he sells his cars at. Even the late Boyd Coddington's show was better than this. I put this show is in the same boat as "Pimp My Ride"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I have noticed the same thing, same guy buys his cars. Its like he built it for him. Its all a setup.

he wanted like $45k for that car. when it didnt come close with no reserve his choice was to up the bid and buy it himself or let it go. either way the auction fees had to be paid.
i think that show sucks as well and barry is a jerk. i always laugh when his car doesn't sell. and i am sure he calls that guy (Arvin?) when he has a car for auction. he has bought 3 or 4 of barry's cars now. there is always the same husband/ wife couple bidding too. weird.

I enjoy the show every now and then, if one , like all the shows mangage to put the obvisiosly rigged soap opera/bimbo BS/ to one side...
Even so, costs etc just dont add up

Just to set the record straight my name is close to the guys name who bids on the cars its not me.Now just so I understand the auction side Barry ended up as high bidder so he can bid on his own car just to up the bid then when it is sold he has to pay the fees because he is the seller and high bidder. What if it had been someone else who ended up as high bidder at the low price is there a way he still could get his car back.My thought is because it is a no reserve auction you cant just buy it back because the sale price was so low.Just want to know if in case I ever end up at a auction and I get a car for a steal price then they tell me sorry sir the owner wants his car back you have to give it back to him I dont want to end up in jail after what I might do Thanks Irvin

Irvin, the high bidder wins a no reserve auction. if the owner wants his car back he has to out bid you. but if you dont go as high as he wants you will never win. of course he does not have to pay himself for the car, but he has to pay the fees. maybe 10%.

Crap weird auction laws there...
Here the owner or their 'agents' cannot bid on their own auction...stops padding..and is a criminal offence
Hence why an auction is submitted as have a reserve or no reserve

The guy has a shill bidder working for him. I see it at a lot of different auctions. It can be the same guy each time or even a group of people to cut the suspicions. If the owner or even the auctioneer thinks they can get more money, they use them. There was a gun auction here a few years ago and our local auctioneer had at least 3 shill bidders working for him. I saw these 3 people buying a lot of low priced guns. Well after the auction was over, these same guys were putting the guns they bought into the auctioneers trunk.

In NZ they would be spending time as a guest of Her Majesty...and if could be proved a conspirsy with the autioneer or owner, the autioneer would loose his licience and also spend time as a guest of Her Majesty

Just for the record, Barry's daughter does frequent this board and his wife also. They stated that part of the show is sort of scripted to make it a bit more interesting. I think you are all being a bit harsh on the show and the way things are done. Remember...its a "TV Show" not a real life drama :) I agree Barry comes off as a hard A&& however his family stated otherwise and now when I watch the show, I look past that.

I agree...BUT one thing I have learnt over the last 50 yrs, is that guys who are more than good, craftsmen in their trade, come over as grumpy or hard nuts, but they are not.
Rather they know what the hell they are talking about and just dont tollerate people telling them how to suck eggs.....But if one just askes questions, listen to them they are very willing to pass on their knowledge and skills
Barry , to me comes over as one of these people, but not as grumpy as he should be .

So should we 'pad ' our comments and give them the wrong impresssion, or be straight up, so they can see how they can improve the show.

Yeah the auctions, they are just a bit of 'interest' story line..and lets face it watching them is a good touch...but slow the cameara down so we can get better look at the other cars...bloody editors , camara men flashing back a forth are a pain in the butt.

They guests who work, yeah thats cool to the story line... lot better than bimbos looking pretty and talking absolute crap.

If each project they concentated on a small skill, like detailed welding a panel, or rolling a patch panel, or making with a sand bag, block sanding, hammer and filling a panel , explain how the steel moves...

But still keep the story line auction, family stuff.

And for a change every so often...a resto of an old 1928 vintage, and olds or essex...
Or even mild rod of a jowett Bradford...something that has never been done properly anywhere in the world.

But hey what would a guy from NZ know? lol.
