View Full Version : Steps to rebuild your dash, and not doing it twice......... 67 camaro
Brandan Jun 15th, 09, 07:35 AM I am in the process of putting the dash together for my 67 convertible. I figured to start this thread kind of like the "what not to forget on your car" thread. I have everything out of the dash board area and getting ready to put it all back in. (I didn't take it out). I was thinking of doing it in this order. (oh yeah it has factory A/C)
INTSTALL:
1) a/c plenom on pass side
2) both kick panels
3) Y duct / Speaker?
4) dash pad
5) dash pad reinstall
6) heater box/vent ducting
7) instrument cluster
8) headlight, ignition, wiper, lighter switches
9) wiring harness
10) ashtray, temp controls, trim
11) glove box/ glove box door
12) ????
That was the order I was thinking of doing it. I remember that in the "what not to forget on your car" thread Dale had some good things in there and I tried to remembrer them here. What would you do different. I don't want to put stuff in and then pull it out because I did it in the wrong order. What did I forget?

tejasrs/ss Jun 15th, 09, 03:33 PM how many dash pads you got!?!
IDS_Bill Jun 15th, 09, 04:30 PM Wiring harness before instrument cluster (I would do it after the first two dash pads but before the last one!)
67SS/RSCONV Jun 15th, 09, 04:36 PM Wiring harness before instrument cluster (I would do it after the first two dash pads but before the last one!)
l:)l:)l:)
Seriously, this is a good post, and I am sure someone is (or will) use it, like me!
IDS_Bill Jun 15th, 09, 04:45 PM I could have used it cause I didn't install my dash pad until after his 3rd one - had to pull the glove box and gauges back out.
Brandan Jun 15th, 09, 06:57 PM I only have one dash pad but I put it in there because I figured I would mess it up after the first installation.:D:D:D
you guys are killing me..................:beers:
Dale8346 Jun 15th, 09, 11:13 PM Hi Brandan,
Firewall blanket first. It does not have to be finished at drivers side. But, it does need to be in correct on passenger side. If the drivers side is lined up with fuse box and gas pedal you are in pretty good shape. I am making that sound easier than it is. One day I will write a thread on that.
The A/C plenum under the cowl does not make a difference when you install it. It has just a vacuum that connects to it and easy access under dash. But first is good. I think I did it last in your group.
The Passenger Kick Panels basically only has to go in first on the passenger side if you have A/C, but if you don’t it is good to get it out of the way. The drivers side does not need to go in at this time. The Drivers Kick Panel has to come out while the emergency brakes is out or loose. It has to go in when E-Brake Support is out or loose. Out is easier. If you are painting, it is easy to remove, so why not just take it out.
The Y Pipe just needs to go in before the heat box or the Steering column. If you have both in without putting it in, you are screwed! You will be pulling the steering column, it is easier !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dash Pad, why not just put it in first while NOTHING is in the way. Not necessary, but why not. Don’t tighten too tight. And don’t forget the clips up there for the wiring.
If you install a new speaker that is original or original like, it is easy to put it in as long as you have not put in the center vent (a/c), temperature control switches, radio, and ash tray.
The heat box is the important item all the duct work can be done at anytime. There is an order to it, but just get the heat box in.
I had the glove box door on long before the glove box container. The glove box container will go in even with the door on.
Instrument Cluster – Last Last Last (you want access to these wires)
Glove box – Last (Do the glove box light switch wire to correct location before fastening box)
By doing both of these last you still have total access to the dash wiring and connections. They are too easy to put in. To install Instrument Cluster, you have to lower the steering column. Not a big deal.
Headlight switch, and the other 3 way before the speedometer bezel (instrument cluster). Don’t forget some of the special wiring.
My order:
Dash Pad (clips for wiring also)
Oil Line connection to firewall (for the really good and organized guys.)
A/C Harness. Basically just the big rubber piece in firewall with wires still on it.
Firewall Blanket
Passenger Kick Panel
Y Duct (if steering column out, just make sure is in before column. I had column out so I did this before I put the column in.)
Heat Box
If you don’t have Dash Pad in, you really must put it in now.
Tail Light Harness (easier to connect if drivers kick panel is out, but is possible with it in)
Wire Harness (connect to tail light harness if drivers kick panel is out)
Headlight Switch, Lighter, ignition switch, Wiper switch
Speaker
A/C center Vent
Temperature control switching (make sure no binding when moving cables)
Radio
Ash Tray
Glove Box door
Glove Box Insert & switch with light and holder
Speedometer Bezel (leave off till car is ready to drive)
All of this is not hard and fast, but there are reasons that I did it in this order that some of you will already know.
Brandan Jun 16th, 09, 07:24 AM Thanks Dale, I see you had the y-duct before speaker..... did you have factory A/C? the firewall pad that I have is an A/C pad but has to be cut out for the heater box. I don't know why they didn't cut that out....
thanks for the info...

Dale8346 Jul 12th, 09, 08:05 AM Yes, Factory A/C.
Stock speakers (or similar) are not a problem at all with the Y Pipe in.
novaderrik Jul 12th, 09, 12:40 PM just start at the bare firewall and work your way out.
if you have pieces left over, they aren't needed.
scblucam Jul 12th, 09, 12:53 PM If you are that far apart by all means Replace the speaker
