View Full Version : How rare is this seat?
67goldrsss Jun 16th, 09, 06:11 PM I just found this on the local craigslist, here in dallas tx. I was just wondering, since I dont ever recall seeing this in any car I have ever looked it.

bertfam Jun 16th, 09, 06:24 PM Well, he's got it listed wrong. It's actually a 1968 Camaro Deluxe bench seat. In 1968, only 4,896 cars came with it (both standard and deluxe), so yes, it's very rare.
Looks kinda beat up though.

68 Ragtop Jun 16th, 09, 06:24 PM Well, if it was a 67 seat, it would be one of 6,583, but since it's actually a 68 seat it's one of 4,896.
Rare, but not super rare, and not that valuable. Probably worth the $150 asking price if you are looking for something different.

So really not as rare as they are making it out to be. I saw this same seat for sale at a swap meet here, for 350.00
68 Ragtop Jun 16th, 09, 06:27 PM Looks like Ed beat me to it.
I guess one mans "rare" is anothers "very rare"!
67 RSS Jun 16th, 09, 06:27 PM Not sure how rare they are but doesn't look '67 to me...
bertfam Jun 16th, 09, 06:47 PM Well, I say very rare since 4,896 out of 235k total producton comes out to just 2 percent. How many were standard and how many were deluxe is unknown, but less than 25 percent of the total production in 68 came with the Z87 deluxe interior. So... if we use that same percentage on the bench seat, it comes out to around 1000 deluxe bench seats, or approximately 1/2 of 1 percent!
As for value, I agree. Not much value in something no one wants!
Some of the MORE RARE (http://www.camaros.org/geninfo.shtml#RareOptions) options...

67goldrsss Jun 16th, 09, 07:06 PM I personally think they are pretty cool, but thats just my own option. Hum, my dads 68 needs a good seat.
soman Jun 16th, 09, 07:09 PM Yes I would agree very rare and i have one of those cars built with a standard interior front bench seat in it and its going to stay that way, Its just not collectible at all but there are plenty of people that ask about it at car shows.

67goldrsss Jun 16th, 09, 07:15 PM Sorry to take away from the thread, my dads 68 was a 6 cylinder 3 spd on the tree car, lemans blue, but it has a white SS hockey strip across the nose and down the side. Its original we can tell. Anyone else ever seen a 68 that had one and was a basic bare bone camaro?
KevinW Jun 16th, 09, 07:18 PM I always liked the bench seats for Camaros, the drawback is you have to have auto or 3 speed on the column to use one :(

you couldnt run a 4 spd on the floor with it? Does the seat sit to far forward?

Trey, the D90 striping was available on any car (not just SS) after January 1st, 1968. A total of 30,541 cars came with it (including the SS cars), so it's not too terribly rare, but it is a nice addition to any car.
It is unusual to see base 6 cylinder cars with any amount of options (except things like the radio), but we have a few in the database that have a large number of options. It seems that a few customers liked the 6 cylinder engines more than the V8's and loaded their cars up!!

Exactly. The shifter would have hit the seat.

Mr. Super Sport Jun 16th, 09, 07:45 PM For $150.00 buy it.

hum, well now I know about his stripe. I just thougt it was unusual. The options are unknown due to the lack of info on the 68's. The car is a low milage one, you can tell by the way the doors shut. They are still like brand new. That sucks about the seat. It would be cool to see in a 4 spd car, with some taxi cab wheels and a BB.
67 RSS Jun 16th, 09, 08:11 PM A friend of mine has a '68 SS with bench and 8 track player.
Due to the rarity he kept the seat but runs a manual tranny/stick.
Seems to work ok..don't remember what shape the stick is...

There are 4 speed bench seat cars out there. I believe there is an L78 bench seat car that is owned by rare4k on this site. It is black with gold interior.
bertfam Jun 17th, 09, 07:59 AM I'm sorry, you're correct, I was thinking D55 Console because it would hit the seat.

First it was my "Caution Fan" sticker, then the "GM" door stickers, now the stripe?!?! So this wasn't original to my 12E non-SS car either? This is what happens when you try to restore a car without the help of TC or CRG.
bertfam Jun 17th, 09, 04:28 PM Kevin, a 12E car could very well have the D90 stripes. We have a few in the database like that.
12E was the last week of the year and cars built late in that week would have been in the paint booth the next week and that comes out to early January, 1968, so yes, very possible.
Ed
Jr68camaro Jun 17th, 09, 04:48 PM So I can understand this more, I also have a 68 camaro with a front bench seat. I would like to keep the seat because of its rarity, but i would like to put a better tranny than what it has. Would this be possible given it has a column shifter?
Jr:confused:

Thanks Ed. The stickers were easy to remove, but the stripes? Not so much.
SpaghettiOs Jun 21st, 09, 07:12 PM My 68 has the same bench seat and I had no idea it was a rare item, I don't have the logo on the headrest though. It was stated above that you could not have a shifter on the floor with the bench but I put mine on the floor a few years back and it works just fine.

If it's not too much to ask, can you please post a picture of your bench seat and floor shifter? I too have a front bench seat and am looking for options.
Thanx
Jr.
rogerh Jun 29th, 09, 09:46 PM I know the bench seat is so rare that I couldn't find any information on the site on how to take the backs off. I want to recover my seat but can't get the backs off the bottom part. I posted a thread about 2 months ago and got no replies.
