Hi, I am getting ready to start a frame off restoration on a 67 coupe. At this time it is completely disassembled and ready to get media blasted.

My question is, which media is best?

I have the options to use Black Beauty, Glass Beads (in various sizes), Walnut shells, etc.
Basically I am looking in the McMaster-Carr catalog (page 2679) for options.

Here is a link to the catalog:

Thanks!

I used "Silica Sand" on my undercarriage - worked great, not too abrasive either.

I used silica sand also but be aware of it's dangers. I would recomend black beauty if it available locally as you will be using alot of what ever you choose.

Sand works well but it's tough on the lungs if you don't have good respiration, especially over time.

I did quite a bit blasting today on some front cap pieces and a deck lid. One time I forgot to hook the neck strap on my respirator. I knew it within a minute. Ughh... Stuff is pretty harsh, as I guess others may be, and I don't really plan on using it much more once I'm out of it.

The key as far as media cost is being able to recover and re-use the media (you'll blow through a lot of it in no time), as well as being able to buy it locally. I would imagine the shipping costs would add up pretty quickly.

The best way I have found to strip the paint off if there is no rust is to have it Soda blasted. The process uses Baking Soda and is non abrasive. It does not cause the panel to warp due to heat build up while blasting. For rust removal Star Blast works very well. It is a product made by Dupont and is avalible in Fine, Medium and Coarse. I never use the coarse grade.
