View Full Version : UPS shipping?
speedfreek Jun 19th, 09, 11:34 AM I have recently been parting out a car and selling a lot of parts on ebay. How can some people only charge $30 for shipping on an item and when I go to ship this same item the store charges me $70? Going to the same address.
I can go to the post office website and calculate shipping and it will be exacly what it says. I can go to ups website and get a quote, then go to the store and get charged way more than quoted.
sick67 Jun 19th, 09, 11:40 AM Are you going to the UPS store, that place is horrendous. I use a local little spot that you would think was expensive but it's way cheaper
purecam Jun 19th, 09, 11:47 AM I have had pretty good luck with fed ex.. Im sure that they are probably no better than anyone else..
gro51 Jun 19th, 09, 11:51 AM I'm a FEDEX courier, so I'm partial, but did you give us a try? 1-800 GO FEDEX. Then there's Fedex Ground which should be even cheaper (but slower). Same phone number, but ask for GROUND.
sleepsinshed Jun 19th, 09, 11:53 AM Exactly why I stopped using UPS and now use the Post Office. It's cheaper and more convenient. I had an AC suitcase that I brought to a UPS store for a shipping quote. Their price was $100. I could have hand delivered it for less.

Joe's right. I ended up paying $35 to have FEDEX ship it.

camaroman7d Jun 19th, 09, 02:45 PM It's because you went to the UPS store, they have inflated prices. If you go to UPS.com and sign up for an account (it's free) you can get quotes and print your own labels, then just drop it off at the UPS store or set up a pick up and have the driver grab it. You will save a lot of time and money.

SY1 Jun 19th, 09, 09:26 PM Patrick I have shipped a lot of personal auto parts and find USPS to be the best deal for me even when going overseas. Large items I can do well with UPS, but only because I registered online for a free account like Royce suggests. You can pay for and print your own shipping labels on line and ship for about 1/2 the cost the UPS store charges. I shipped a M20 4 speed for $45 by printing my own label. UPS store wanted $90.
I order a lot of jet aircraft parts AOG (Aircraft On Ground) which usually means I need them the next morning early to make a flight. In 28 years of doing this Fed Ex has almost never let me down. They do have excellent service.
I will say UPS also does a good job, except I have receieved a LOT of packages shipped UPS and shipped a few that UPS just destroyed. Most recently they've crushed a set of valve covers, torn open and destroyed a set of rocker moldings, and a motorola cell phone AT&T shipped to me in a UPS shipping bag appears to have been completely underwater as everything inside was damaged by water. UPS won't stand behind their poor service either, don't expect them to stand up and do what's right once they destroy something of yours. They've cost me some $$$ as a result of their negligence and I think I'm ready to switch completely to Fed Ex. I've never had problems with my business shipping using Fed Ex, so maybe time to change my personal shipping to them also.
Another tip since you are parting out cars, regarding shipping container. Cardboard boxes are all rated for strength. On the bottoms of almost every cardboard box is circle about 2.5" in size that inside states the maximum weight the box is rated for and it's dimensions. Some people don't know this, but it helps greatly when you are looking for a sturdy box for your items.
gro51 Jun 19th, 09, 09:54 PM Guys, no matter who you use, pack your stuff like it's raw eggs. Use lots of bubble wrap, popcorn, newspaper, etc. And then lots of tape. Leave no room for stuff to move around inside. Again, I have worked for Fedex for 10 years. You would not believe how many hundreds of thousands of packages get shipped daily. They all get stacked on top of one another in giant metal cans before being loaded onto aircraft or tractor trailers. And all this happens at a blistering pace. I'm sorry to say, but putting a FRAGILE sticker on a box does nothing. You gotta pack the crap out of it.
If it's not well-packed, it's likely it will get damaged regardless if it's UPS, FEDEX, USPS, whomever. None of us purposely damage packages. It's just the volume and speed of the whole process.

I was wondering the same thing if i was getting hosed at ups store. Thanks for the sign up tip. I bought a billet grille from summit, and box was so torn i couldn't believe it didn't fall out. I had to insist driver give me a reciept when they came back to pick up damaged grille. Now i also label the item inside with who its going to just in case box is ripped open.
