View Full Version : going to drag race for first time tonight
bikedude3 Jun 19th, 09, 02:14 PM hi guys im goint to run my 68 at a strip for first time tonight.never raced on track before.im guessing around high 12s or 13 second pass.what do you guys think?about car.72 350 stock heads,around a 268 cam.headers,torqer intake with holley 650dp.turbo 400 with shift kit and 2800 stall.open 10 bolt with 355 gears,multi leaf,12 inch wide street tire..oh yea h.e.i dist.with accel coil.either way should be a blast.il let ya know how i did:D
67 Plum Jun 19th, 09, 02:38 PM I think lots of tire smoke and a 14 sec. pass.
johnny5 Jun 19th, 09, 02:45 PM I'd say impossible to get a 12 scond time slip or even high 13 second time slip. Have fun, its a blast. My guess 14.4xx
camaroman7d Jun 19th, 09, 02:48 PM Street tires and an open differential usually end up with no traction and poor 60ft times. The first 60' is very important. I think you will run low 14's.
You will then be hooked with the I want to go faster bug and your bank account will shrink. Welcome to the club.
DOUG G Jun 19th, 09, 04:09 PM I see a mid 14 second pass
Then a trip to the speed shop now that the speed bug has bit you
Then lots of TLC time with the car
Then another trip to the track
and keep repeating...... again, again, and again
68rs406 Jun 19th, 09, 04:18 PM I went 13.80 with about the same set up, right after I bought my car. The difference is I had a posi, and I have a feeling that's going to be a big difference.
I think you are capable of low 14's, but the first pass I would be happy to see high 14's I think. Just remember if you idle out of the hole and roll into the throttle slowly it will be quicker than mashing the throttle and smoking the tires, and if they are street radials drive around the water box and resist doing a big burnout.
You are right either way it's going to be an absolute blast! Let us know how it goes
By the way, Selma huh? Are you going to Medford to race? Selma is a nice little area, my wife and I stay on the Rogue in Grants pass on vaction from time to time.
2x67rs/ss Jun 19th, 09, 06:50 PM Mid 14's and alot of spinning. Then alot of spending!
Dont forget the driveshaft loop to go with the posi and slicks!;)
1962vette Jun 19th, 09, 09:43 PM I would be surprised if he gets into the 14's. Sounds more like a 15 second car at this point. Need some more "parts " to get it hooked up and a little more under the hood. Will be fun any way for his first outing.
bikedude3 Jun 19th, 09, 10:41 PM I think lots of tire smoke and a 14 sec. pass.
you must have been there.lol.yep ran 4 passes first one 14.96 @96mph last pass 14.23@97mph.track (14.23@98mph.track) was real sticky.broke them loose when i hit 2nd gear but not bad.i stayed out of water box:hurray:had the time of my life.im hooked
bikedude3 Jun 19th, 09, 10:51 PM what a blast.had the time of my life.im hooked.the car did ok for not much traction.i stayed out of water and did a short hop.i raced 4 times won 3.the last one was joke i went up againts a 990 blower car with slicks.best time of 14.23@97mph.was getting quicker each time .60 ft was 2.149.raced a 69 z/28 with a 302 and 4 speed.1st time i got em good 2nd time was a good race just barley got him.we both will be on local news the camara man rode with him then intervewed us both.i was surprised how slow my car was .that finish line comes up fast.thx guys you will be hearing more from me on a big block biuld
PowerWindows Jun 19th, 09, 10:59 PM I like BBC cars (see sig)....
68rs406 Jun 19th, 09, 10:59 PM Well done, you must have the car pretty well figured out driving wise, those are real decent times for that combo. Now get som drag radials and a posi, get that 60' time in a reasonable area (1.7-1.8's) and you should see solid mid-low 13's. You might as well just accept the fact that all you money will soon be gone, but it's going to be a blast
PS, do I get a prize? I guessed high 14's on your first pass if everything worked, and the car was capable of low 14's...:D

DOUG G Jun 20th, 09, 04:48 AM BB's not needed to go fast :D
Told you the speed bug would bite
Everett#2390 Jun 20th, 09, 06:37 AM You're hooked alright, but its only the beginning of an experience you will never forget.
The best teacher is practice. Having another person watch. listen and take video of you and the car helps extremely.
Watching and having the person tell you from their point of view is helpful.

Watching and having the person tell you from their point of view is helpful.yes i could see where that would help alot.the tree guy was great he walked me out on the track to show me the staging lights and how far apart the pre stage and deep stage distance was.the wife shot video plus i got to see myself on the news so that was cool.im going to work on a posi trac rear and some slicks.the car is my summer show car/cruser so i wont be racing every weekend but every chance i get.:)
Skeeter55 Jun 20th, 09, 08:48 AM Clayton,
Nicely done and very respectfull... As everyone here knows i cant brag (YET) because i haven't taken mine to the track yet and don't plane to anytime soon... I just cant afford to fix what i may brake with this BBC.. I'm glad you went threw with it, i wish my computer would allow me to watch your vids, but it sounds like you had an awesome time. Keep it up.

thx it was rush.lol i was ready to get sick before the race started and of course i was the first car to go out.just talked to a freind and he said he has some 13 inch slicks and a 10 bolt locker with 508 gears.that should get me going.lol would suck on the street thoe
2x67rs/ss Jun 20th, 09, 10:11 AM Dont forget the drive shaft loop... Congratulations very respectable for what you have. Now get out the wallet and have more fun!
camaroman7d Jun 21st, 09, 10:07 PM 5.08 gears! I don't think you will like that very much with a 1/4 mile car and short tires (under 30" tall). Unless that engine likes to spin to 8000+ RPM it's really not going to work well.
I know you're fired up and excited (which is normal), but take baby steps and ask lots of questions, so you only have to spend the money once and you don't hurt your car.
You said it's a street cruiser, 5.08's are going to like street driving at all. You should stay 3.73:1 or numerically lower if you plan to do much street driving.
You also have a lot of room to grow before you start thinking big block. Not all big block cars are fast, I have sent quite a few home on the trailer with a fairly mild pump gas 383 SBC.
Everett#2390 Jun 22nd, 09, 07:29 AM A stomach full of butterflies always happens. As Royce suggested, ask questions and watch others.
When taking videos, try to get the tree in the picture - this way you can see your reaction time, the car's reaction time as the 'tree counts down.
If you go with slicks, as said, you'll need a driveshaft safety loop, and depending on thickness of alum wheel used, wheel studs long enough to go into the hex portion of the lugnut, Factory steel wheels will be fine.
I'd practice on the line first before going faster.
Hatman Jun 22nd, 09, 07:40 AM Heck I've been drag raceing for 15 years & I just went out for the first time this year & I had buterflies, but that first pass was a 10.27 @ 130 mph ,and all the butterflies went away. Have fun and remember safty first. One more bit of advice have a plan of what times you want to run weith the car & buy the parts that will get you there, don't just be bolting on parts because they cheap chances are they won't work for your car. Like the gears. All the parts have to work togther. Ie cam, gears, compression, tires on& on .
bikedude3 Jun 25th, 09, 04:21 PM thx guys for info.yes the 508 gears is to low for motor.it would wind out way before the finish line.my motor doesnt want to rev much higher then about 5200 i guess the stock heads are hurting me.a freind offered the gears and slicks is the only reason i brought them up.im thinking 411s as low as i want even then i wouldnt want for the highway.money is real tight now for me and most others so i wont be spending much soon.iv bean trying everything possible to not have to sell the car to save the house.iv sold most other toys to save the camaro.i already have a 72 454 that needs a rebuild iv bean dreaming of 496 ci for the car plus the car is already set up for big block such as motor mount stands and heater core.so mabe one of these days il be able to get it in there.after im out of hot water money wise.in the mean time im going to have fun driving my camaro with what it has.its realiable somewhat fast and looks great and a kick in the $ss to drive
6D9 Jun 26th, 09, 11:14 PM Forget about crazy gears and slicks...all you need are 3 things and it not gonna break the bank....
1....small nitrous kit...100 shot
2....posi unit...keep your 3.55's
3....drag radials
This should get you some solid mid 12's with a good launch

yea another freind said same thing.the posi would cost the most.seen a 12 bolt out of camaro on craigslist the other day it was spendy at $1100 bucks.im going to see about one for my 10 bolt:)
ChrisM Jun 27th, 09, 02:43 PM Go easy off the line. Don't spin the tires and you might be just under 14 flat at about 105mph. Put the peddle to the floor, smoke the tires and you will be into the 15's. Watch the 60 foot times on your tickets. The better they are the better your times will be. Get some slicks and go under 14 all day long, even with the open end rear (unless your heads kill you).

Look at a Power Trax No Slip or Lock Right either one can be installed at home in your garage or driveway right into your current rear end without needed to set up the gears or any special tools. Either one can be had for much less than buying a new rear end or having a shop install a posi. They work great and are strong. I think the Lock Right is a bit cheaper, I had one in a previous car and it held up fine and was easy to install.
