Oh yea BABY!

I got a wild hair up my you know what and decided to shoot the underside of my deck lid, the spoiler, and the cowl grill.

I was really curious how the gun with the 1.4 tip would spray, and whether or not the paint would flow and look even.

Well, I think it looks great. I just popped in here to take a break after my third coats to them. They have to flash for 40 minutes, then it is out for 3 coats of clear!

I will post pics of those after a bit..............

Ooooooooo so cool! http://www.68camaroproject.com/images/smileys/pics2.gif

Congrats Don!!! ain't it cool just to lay down some sort of color?

I was out in the shop today working on my 69 and I started wondering how your project was going. Low and behold, here it is.

I did the same thing....I shot the underside of the hood and trunk while I jammed the doors themselves and body jams. Right after that, I went around the car and shot any place that would tie my up....places like the window insets, rain gutters, a-pillars, trunk lid jams....you know, things like that. This way I won't waste time on theres places while I'm doing the big stuff.

HERE (http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa282/Kokamo44/69%20Rising%20from%20the%20ashes/IMG_3400-1.jpg) and HERE (http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa282/Kokamo44/69%20Rising%20from%20the%20ashes/IMG_3403-1.jpg) is a pic of my car while I was at this point.

Man, it's exciting right? Hell, I'm excited for you man.

Can't wait to see some progress!

I kind of thought you might be first Joe!

They are not the best pics, there is still a little haze in the air, and the flash doesn't help, but it will give you an idea!

I really like the color, it will look great with the bright white D90 SS stripe!

Here ya go:

I am using DeVillbiss FLG-3 "finish Line" guns. They came as a set, one with a 1.8 & 2,0 fluid tip, and one with a 1.3 & 1.4 fluid tip.

I just could not afford an Iwata, or a SATA gun; I have however been very happy with these.

Here is a pic of them:

Thanks thus far fer' the compliments guys! I went out this AM and had a gander at the parts. They are not too bad. I obviously have some light dust/dirt on the surface of the clear, but no runs, sags or drips. Coverage is uniform, and no tiger stripes.......(yet! LOL) I may have to put some more clear on my spoiler however; it seems to be a bit dry on one end......

I to get everything seal coated with the exception of the main body, hood, outsides skin of doors, and top of decklid.

As soon as my order arrives, I am going to get that other stuff done...........and I will soon thereafter be off to the races......I can barely wait to see the body in this color............

I do have one concern however;

The manufacturer of the stripe stencil kit I bought has a warning about Scotch decals with Urethane paints. It recommends you wait until the paint is FULLY cured............or it could bubble...... Now isn't that kind of silly? I would be WAAAAAAY out of the acceptable range to put on clear coat?>?>?>?>

What is your take guys? Is this meant for "permanent" decals? Do tell...... Have any of you read, or know about this?

Anyway..........Thx guys.........

Don

Awesome Don. Keep up the good work and the pics. This is what I need to keep working on mine. Great motivation. Going to a car show today, but won't be there long. Must come back and spend some time in the garage!! Nice work. Can't wait to see more. Thank you.

The vinyl could pevent the sovents from escaping and be pushed out; thus creating a bubble. By the time you get the car cut, buffed, reassembled and the quirks worked out, application of the stripe will be of no issue.

Thanks Scott;

I was not clear in my question........

The stencil kit if all painted stripes. There will be no decals on the car permanently. They should be on there for a couple hours maybe? Time enough to locate them each, apply them, and then pull them off after the stripe color sets a bit..........

Do you think I would run the chance of bubbles in that short of a time? The Bubbles are really only a concern to me if it causes an edge of a mask line to lift and screws up the stripe(s)

Maybe its' a non issue for this instance.............?

Its a temptation for me but painting small parts first just means less space to work because now i got small things to cover and not let touch anything. I got to do body first so I have a place to put all the parts I paint. I'm going body-doors, wheel wells-fenders- hood and trunk-header,valance,spoiler. I don't plan on jambing, just going to hang the doors, hood, and trunk lid. Someday.

Don, do you have any pictures of how you masked the trunk and jambs? Looks like you had the interior inside the car when you painted, i was going to try to do this also but was concerned about overspray seeping in somehow.

I'll be trying this just like you in the near future and just wanted to get some visual guidelines.

thanks,
Rob

looks sweet. Love the color, as doug asked " what color is it??" who makes it??

Original68fromauntsgarage
Jun 24th, 09, 02:34 PM
Gentlemen;

The color is from TCP Global out of San Diego Ca. check them on the net.

It is a metallic base paint called "Fire Red Peral" It is in their "restoration Shop" line of paints.

As far as masking the trunk; basically what I did was to run tape around the perimeter JUST BARELY in side the lip. I then covered the top of the car with plastic, and papered the rest.

As for the doors frames, I pulled the headliner back just a scoche, and then applied tape to the whole inner perimeter of the door fram, and filled with paper. It is pretty easy. I can see about putting up some pics of that later.
