I am ordering a 350 crate engine for my 67, bone stock 260 hp. I was just wandering if anyone has tried putting one of these cams in a stock engine.
I would like to try it just for the sound, but don't know about the vacumn or how radical they would be on the street, or would it work at all...

For a stock 260 hp crate motor and a really nice lope try the old Crane 274 H06 218-218-.450 lift 106 lsa cam. Will sound like a thumper cam but work fine with your low c.r. Elgin sells a copy of it under part number E1785PM for $100 including lifters at competitionproducts.com My buddy put this cam in his 260 crate motor with 600 edel carb, headers, 4 speed and 3.73. Sounds bad ass for a 218 duration cam. You may need a mild stall if you are running a 3.08 or less rear gear. This cam is a lift rule oval track cam and has lots of low and midrange. 14" of vacuum at 1000 rpm, 11 at 800. Thumpr would not be that streetable in my opinion with your low c.r.. The 274 Elgin will sound like a much bigger cam than what it is.

The thumper cam has too much lift for your stock 260 or 290hp engine. You'll crush the stem seals. I have the 290hp engine and theres only .015 clearance left at full lift with the stock 290hp cam.

people talk a lot of trash on the thumper cams, I know a couple guys who have them, one in a sbc and one in a mustang, they sound pretty good to me. And both say the performance didn't suffer any, they just don't seem to gain a lot.

Yes you hear alot of negetive.I think in the right application their isn't a problem with them. But for this application it isn't the right choice.

I don't think it would be very good in a turbo engine.

Imho, no more than a good old Isky 264 Mega cam will do great here!

B/c of your sorry CR!

And then probably more powerful would be a CC 260HE.

And heck, very LITTLE "cam-cackle", but the old generic Performer 204/214 cam will do good too!

Summit sell's it for change out of a "C"-note w/ new lifters if not mistaken.

If you want to optimize the exhaust sound then get a Thumpr. If you want optimal performance, you'll end up getting something else.

Do a search on this site and others. The Thumpr gets a lot of bad reviews.

That's why I suggested the 274H06 the 106 lsa helps build cylinder pressure raising the dynamic compression ratio.

He, He!!

Take that old 274H06 and drop a set of solid lifters on her, hot lash them at .004" to .006" and go!!

He, He!!
