View Full Version : Gas gauge help

So my gas gauge hasn’t worked since I bought the car (’67 RS) and I finally tracked down the problem. I traced the tan wire from the tank back to the dash wiring harness and found that it didn’t go to the instrument cluster. I’m guessing my car had a gauge pack because the tan wire went to the gauge pack connector (near the console).

Okay, here’s the problem. At some point, someone removed the gauge pack and put in a standard instrument cluster with a spedo and gas gauge. I’d like to hook up the gas gauge, but I’m not sure how to tie it back into the instrument cluster wiring.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? How does the instrument cluster gas gauge get it’s resistance value? Can I wire it to the gas gauge without going through the wiring harness and circuit board?

Thanks,
Matt

After some searching I think I found a solution. I believe my instrument cluster connector is currently wired for a tachometer (brown wire instead of a tan wire)

It looks like I need to do opposite of what is shown in this picture—disconnect the brown tach wire and replace it with a patch wire over to the tan wire at the gauge pack connector.

Here is a good picture I found in someone’s post:
