: New Mufflers
1BadZ Apr 30th, 03, 12:27 PM I have a 79 Z28 with a 454 .030 over built pretty stout. I have 2 chamber flowmasters...cannot remember which series. The exhaust is 3" and ends at the muffler. I am going to switch to a different muffler...something quieter and was wondering what the suggestions were and if anyone has sound files or have any links? Thanks in advance.
dk01_99 Apr 30th, 03, 06:35 PM well first off 3" is loud. if i were you i'd get something that is 3 chambered which will do a little better but i dunno what else...anyone??
67RS502 May 1st, 03, 02:36 AM If you have the 2 chamber flows,
then a set of Hooker aerochambers would be much
better, especially if you get the 22" long ones!
They're good flowing mufflers and way quieter then the flows.
Slowazzbu May 1st, 03, 03:11 AM If your looking to quiet the car consider a larger case straight thru muffler. I myself just took off a smaller pair of Straghtline Performance mufflers to be replaced with a pair of #17233 Dynomax welded Ultraflows. These are 20" long which will make a noticable difference over a shorter case muffler...comes down to more surface area to help quiet the sound.

Also, if you want a quieter sound, you can add a H-pipe or better yet, a Dr. Gas X-pipe.

Lastly, if you have turn downs presently, consider going to full tail pipes to take more sound away.
Yellow68SS May 1st, 03, 01:32 PM I am runnig the Delta Flow 50 Series 3 chamber mufflers and they are also 3 inch. It is not bad cruising around town but on the highway with my 4.56 gears it has alot of drone. The tone is also incredibbly deep and travels a long way especially when i am on it. When i romp on it my car can easily be heard from 3/4 of a mile on a calm evening when traffic is light. Not exactly the "Mild Performance Sound" That flowmaster claims. I couldn't imagine 2 chamber flowmasters on my 454
Joe G May 1st, 03, 06:45 PM I'm running a 396 with headers, 3" exhaust with H pipe, reduced to 2 1/2 over the axle. I had Flomasters and it was way too loud with the long duration cam. I would set off car alarms when I drove by. Droned on the freeway, reverberated inside the car. It was 88 decibels inside the car! Replaced the Flowmasters with FloPros. Quite a bit quieter but still too loud and droning. Had a "blat" type of sound when I got on it.
I just replaced them with 14" Dynomax (no room for anything longer with my setup). What a difference. Nice low mellow sound; no droning. In fact I can actually hear the engine now on the freeway. Radio too. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
The specs say they flow better than the Flowmasters, but it's really hard to tell. I can't feel any difference, but I really like the sound.
It has what I think is a classic muscle car sound now. I was really surprised they were so quiet for being such a short muffler.
I would definitely recommend them. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

joe Joe, or anyone for that matter, do you have a video or audio clip of your cars running with the new mufflers, instead of those LOUD Flowmasters? smile.gif
Brian Lewis May 3rd, 03, 10:01 AM I am in the same boat, I am running Dual 2 1/2" Flowmaster 40 Series mufflers right now, and its just way too loud with my 383 and Hedmann headers. I want to get it as quiet as possible without getting rid of the 'healthy purr sound' when idle.
Anyone using the Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers? Yes its their quiet ones, but I was wondering how they sound with headers and a good stout engine behind them. They are only rated for 410 cfm each and my engine calls for 511cfm each, so I'd lose a few hp right?
Its either that or the Ultra Flo units. Anyone can comment on either I'd appreciate it. Basically trying to 'modernize' my 69 camaro to be more enjoyable to drive even though its just a weekend toy.

Brian Lewis May 3rd, 03, 01:50 PM I am even more confused now, check out this CFM TABLE (http://www.corvettefaq.com/c3/cfm.pdf) I found. As you can see my Flowmaster 42541 (same as 42540) does only 352 CFM! That means a Dynomax Super Turbo at 410 cfm is better equipped for my 465hp engine! Dynomax UltraFlo on the other hand does 1133 cfm each, wow! Uhhgg decisions. I heard all the sounds on dynomax.com, but obviously its hard to get a real world picture from a WAV file.

I have used the Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers on a 10 to 1 350 with a 292H Comp Cam, on my 69. They were MUCH quieter than my header mufflers. They sound very good at an idle, not too loud. The were the short 2 1/2" Super Turbos. When you open it up, they sound very good. I added a 396, with a 294s Comp cam, and it sounded great. They do get a little louder though when they get some miles on them. Mine have around 500 miles on them, and they got a little louder, but not too loud. I can hear the radio now, and they are dumped out at the rear end. I was considering running the louder Flowmasters, but from what everyone is saying, or everything I've heard, is that they are WAY too loud. I just wanted something radical sounding, I guess I'll live with being able to talk or hear the radio going down the highway. Even though, I am going to add one of them noisy things that stick out of the hood that have a terrible whine to it! ;) :D tongue.gif
ztoy May 4th, 03, 08:07 AM I took off my header mufflers and replaced the system with a Dr. Gas 'x' pipe setup, then installed a set of welded mufflers I bought from a website online which flow better than dynomax's. Quieted the car right down (I can hear the stereo now) and when you accelerate it sounds awesome, plus (they claim a 10% hp increase with the x pipes and those mufflers) it really pulls harder! But it is a lot quieter while still retaining the throaty sound of the motor.
1BadZ May 26th, 03, 11:17 AM Thanks for your input. I will let ya know when I decide and get the new mufflers on...shouldn't be too long.
