I am planning on doing a transmission swap on my 68 Camaro.

It currently has SB 350 pumping out about 355HP. What transmission would be best suited, which would be the easiest to install i.e what modifications would I require with either install. It currently has a floor mounted Hurst shifter

Also consider a 700r to get overdrive. Simple shortening of the driveshaft and a new gate on the shifter and you can be good to go. Highway mileage will improve far more with the 700r vs the Th350 or 400.

Th400 would be a good upgrade but that th350 should handle your motor just fine!!

TH350 will be fine with your HP level and is a direct bolt in from the powerglide.

The 400 is stronger, but will take away more power.

The 350 will fit with the same crossmember, and driveshaft, you will need shifter and
kick down modifications, of course an overdrive trans is great for driving.

I would bite the bullet and get an Overdrive transmission.

One of my biggest regrets is putting $600 into a boat anchor Turbo 350. It is a great transmission, but the Overdrive makes driving the car much more enjoyable.I opted for a 2004R from a local trans builder for $650 including the torque convertor and it was a very easy conversion..
I just switched my rear end gears to 3.73 with an Eaton Posi and I now have the best of both worlds. At freeway speeds my motor is only turning about 2400 rpm.
I would say the Overdrive was the best mod I have done to the car..

I already have 3.73 posi rear end. So what was involved in the conversion, does the drive shaft have to be shortened, does the crossmember need to be changed. I am on the other side of the world so I cant just nip to the local store to pick up conversion parts. Does some one sell a conversion kit for the PG to 2004R

The driveshaft does not have to be shortened when installing a 200 4R in place of a Powerglide. I would invest in the Bowtie Overdrives Crossmember. http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/catalog/catalog_inc/viewitem.php?ITEMID=56 It utilizes the stock holes for the crossmember and you can drop the pan without having to remove the crossmember.

I used the Bowtie Overdrives crossmember and Shiftworks shifter detent and trans lever kit and both work perfect. The only thing I don't like about the crossmember is that I had to dent my exhaust pipe to provide clearance as the tubular crossmember sits a little lower than stock. It could also be that my headers are sitting too low on the floorpan.

All in all it is not any more difficult than replacing a Powerglide or Turbo 350..and no drive shaft mods needed..

If you are using a floor mount Hurst shifter you probably dont need the Shiftworks kit. I think most aftermarket shifters are set up for an Overdrive detent.
The only other item would be a switch for the lock up convertor. I just used a brake light switch with a normally closed cruise control terminal to kill power to the TCC solenoid when you hit the brakes.

Forget the auto's and go to a TKO600. You get the overdrive gear and also the fun of banging the gear. I went from a PG to the TKO and I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! I will never drive another auto. There is nothing like banging gears. If you are going to be going to a 200-4R, it's not that much more money for the TKO. I paid just over $4500 for EVERYTHING, driveshaft, crossmember, flywheel, clutch, and hydraulic clutch linkage included. If you choose to use mechanical linkage, it will be cheaper, but if you have headers, you will need to know the make and whether or not they will work with a manual tranny. I didn't know the make so I went with the hydraulic setup. Plus, I'll never have to adjust the clutch cable. Not to mention the cool factor looks of the hydraulic slave cylinder and the steel braided lines.

This guy sells a complete 700r-4 conversion specifically for first gen. You would only need to do a 180 on your existing crossmember. Mine should be arriving pretty soon, but I wont be able to bolt it up for months :/

Their website says:

"If you are looking to convert your 3 speed automatic TH350 or TH400 equipt 67,68 or 69 Camaro to a 4 speed overdrive automatic with lock up converter, this kit will make it happen."

So what about converting from a PG? Does this kit still work?

I know very little about PG's and what crossmembers they need, etc. I would assume that you would need a shifter with at least 3 speeds (TH350-TH400 or aftermarket). Of course if you were to go aftermarket, i would assume you would go with a 4 speed shifter. And possibly a stock TH350 crossmember (or aftermarket). Im sure someone here will know if the powerglide has the same crossmember or not though.

You should give them a call. He's very helpful and gives great advice.
