I just installed a new intake manifold and new edelbrock 1407 carburetor on my original 327 that is mated to my 67's original powerglide. The problem is that now the kickdown link seems about 1 inch too short. Has anyone else encountered this issue before? How do you guys get around it? The throttle link is extendable so that it can still be used but not the kickdown link. It doesn't extend far enough. So... I was thinking of adding an extension to the end of the link, on the side of the carburetor but that extension would not have that long channel that the little ball end link travels on. So basically it will be fixed in position. Is that OK or is the long channel necessary for some reason. What is that channel for? I was going to add a plate that will attach to that channel by placing bolts through it where the ball link usually rides. The idea is that when installed, the kickdown link will not put any pressure on the throttle linkage of the carb when in idle but since it will be locked in place it will immediately begin to move as the throttle is applied. Is that OK? It seems like it would be since the springs would usually make the link do this anyway. Am I about to make a huge mistake? I just don't want to have to make more mods to the car by having to go with some difficult to install intricate wire/cable system. I just couldn't leave a 2 barrel carb on my car.

Thanks

cut the rod, thread it and install a turn buckle.

or....

cut it and weld in a section, grind it and make it perfect.

Just get rid of the powerglide altogether! That would fix the problem. :) Since you have started down the path of mods, you will be cursing the powerglide soon enough. The best bet for a less mod replacment is a 200r4.

I ran into this issue when I installed a Q-Jet. There seems to be 2 different kickdown rods. The difference is 2 or 4 barrel. I am going to take a guess that you had a 2 barrel originally? My car was originally a 2bbl car, but the kickdown rod worked for my Edelbrock. It wasn't until I went to the Q-Jet that it came up short. If you go to Rick's Camaro and order part #RC-177, that is the 4bbl rod. It is about 1" longer than the 2bbl rod. Oh, I remember why it worked on my Edelbrock, I have this part attached to the hole in the arm:

This should allow you to use your existing rod. It did for me. It wasn't until I installed the Q-Jet that I had to change rods completely. The Q_jet did have a place for this extension.

I also agree wholeheartidly about replacing the PG. I had a PG and I have to say, for a race car, they can't be beat, but for a street car, they suck!!!!! Especially if you have a performance rear. I have 4.10's and the final drive of the PG of 1:1 made for a horrible drive on the highway. High revs and poor mileage. ANY tranny that doesn't offer an overdrive gear will be the same. So if you go to a TH-350, TH-400 or even a manual Muncie 4spd, if it doesn't offer a final drive ratio of something lower than 1:1, like .68:1 or .50:1, then you are in the same boat. Switching to a TKO600 was the best thing I did for the car. I can actually get on the highway now and go in the fast lane without people blowing their horn or showing me their love(if you know what I mean). ;)

DUDE!!!!! I have that very piece new in a box in my garage! I had no idea what it was for! Please tell me you can describe to me how to attach it and where to put it because I have no clue. I have to go this route for now. A new tranny is just not in the cards. I'm tapped. I can't even think of a new tranny for another year or so. Besides that... the more mods I make to the car the more in the hole I get and the harder it is to do the mods (BIG snowball effect). My 67 is only going to be a weekend cruiser here in Vegas and for LOCAL car shows. So I gotta live with this for now.

Do you have any pics of how that goes attached? Or can you explain it to me? Thanks!

You my friend... are the BOMB! Thanks! I was only about an inch short and that sure looks like it'll make up the difference. I'm going to give that a go this weekend. I'll have a case of cold ones in your honor when I fire her up!

Thanks again

Since I'm not really sure where to find a turnbuckle for the threads on that link rod, I will probably end up welding an extension to it as you guys mentioned if the little adaptor doesn't work for me. I'm trying to find the easiest way to git'er done. And since I'm still learning how to weld... I think I'll try the premanufactured piece first. Thanks for all the great suggestions guys!

Threads are 1/4-28. I haven't seen any turnbuckles with this thread.

Of course... that soooo figures. It's like a government funded and built project isn't it?
