View Full Version : dash pad repair--adhesion question

So, instead of buying a repro dash pad for my '69, I've decided to make an attempt at restoring mine. It's in fairly good shape. However, on a couple of the corners, the pad and vinyl cover is peeling away from the backing.

I was thinking that if I could heat up the area in question, and then lay down some good adhesive, it would work fine and look as good as new.

Question is, can anyone recommend a good adhesive for this type of job? I obviously can't "peel" back the pad, as it's not lifted very much and I'd hate to cause more damage. So, it'll need to get in a somewhat small area.

Also, should I purchase a heat gun or do you think i could get away with using a hair dryer or something else to heat the area up (while a log on fire sound enticing, I'm not that stupid. :D) ?

Thanks.

I carefully used my butane torch on low setting to heat my pad and arch the warped areas back to their original shape. Worked well, pad looks much better. Now I need to repaint it with vinyl spray paint.
