: Engine VIN stamp missing

I am looking for the experts experience on this one.
I'm working on an original 6032 mile 70 Z28, that is about 95% original mechanically (IMHO).

I have searching through all of the components for numbers. All of the date codes I can find on the car coincide with the cowl tag 07C build date.

Have any of you ever seen a known original engine to be missing the VIN stamp?

I will look at the casting date on the block when I remove the engine.
That will probably be the way to verify that it is most likely original. I can see the 3970010 on the drivers side.

I closely examined the deck surface, and the original broached surface is intact. The stamping is V0701CTC which matches the rest of the car. There is no evidence of a VIN stamp. This is a Norwood car.

I will post pics as soon as my camera battery re-charges.

I have searched for a build sheet, but cannot find one.

The 12 bolt rear axle is stamped COZ 0701 E.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Chris

It is probably on the cast surface adjacent to the oil filter. Moved there early in the '69 model year at Norwood.

Starting in 1970, the serial number is stamped either above the oil filter, somewhere on the block pad (in front of the cylinder head), or on the transmission flange somewhere. Chevrolet issued technical service bulletins to indicate which engines were to recieve a vin stamp, so who knows what could have happend (or not happened).
