View Full Version : 406 question??
wayne33 Jul 4th, 09, 02:00 AM sorry if this is a repeat for some. just dont want to make mistake. since motor is out.
Im putting together a 406 for my 68 camaro, weekend driver.
I have a stock bottom end with dish pistons, 194 150 with 74cc chambers ,edelbrock air gap intake, hei, 1.6 procomp roller rockers arms, Saturday Night Special Camshaft; Hyd.Flat Tappet; Racing; RPM 2800-6400; Adv.Dur. 284 Int./290 Exh.; Valve Lift .480 Int./.494 Exh.; Lobe Angle 106 deg., holley 750 dp carb, procomp gear drive, th-350, 373's posi 10 bolt.
What kind of horse power/ torque will i be look at? any thing different you guys will do?
thanks a head of time
dawg Jul 4th, 09, 04:42 AM I put a crank girdle on my 406 aswell as block filler up to the freeze plugs to strenghten the lower end.
400 block weak point is the lower end btw.
I would be weary of the procomp stuff your putting on aswell.
youll likely be getting around 400 to 450 HP and just shy of 490 ft lbs of torque.
one thing i noticed is the 406 likes to breath so a intake with large runners is a must.
heres a pic of my 406:

That is very close to how mine started out and it was a fun motor (best it ran was a 13.2 @ 101) with nothing more than a head swap (200 cc Protopline Iron Lightnings) it went to 12.3 @ 110.
67 Plum Jul 4th, 09, 09:48 AM I have almost the same combo except flat top pistons , a factory cast iron intake , 650 spreadbore double pumper and 1.5 roller rockers.TH350 with 3.08 gears. Here is a video of it http://s703.photobucket.com/albums/ww34/67plum/?action=view¤t=MVI_0678.flv

It was a little rich but with the humidity we have here water pours out the pipes also.
wayne33 Jul 4th, 09, 06:51 PM thanks for responses. I got the idea of the cam idea from 67 plum. one day i will upgrade heads. i got these for $200 rebuilt from local shop.
i just noticed something 67 plum you said you are running rich with a 650 dp.

Yes the jets in it were to big when I got it. It's fixed now.
AlexFolino Jul 4th, 09, 08:52 PM May i ask how you like the sound (idle) of that Saturday night special cam? Im doing a 406 at the moment to and i love a choppy rough idle.
pdq67 Jul 4th, 09, 09:56 PM What's your final compression ratio b/c imho, a 284 cam will like 10.5 to 1.
(A 270, 10 and a 290, right at 11 to 1)..

Mine is 9.8 to 1. I think the 400 makes so much torque you can get away with larger cams and lower comp. compared to 350 and smaller cube motors.
DOUG G Jul 5th, 09, 08:29 AM With the stock GM heads and 9.5:1 and a 280H CompCam... changed heads with smaller CC chambers to get compression to 10.2:1 and same cam...
Never an issue I could tell.

Didn't you have 2.73 gears?
DOUG G Jul 5th, 09, 08:48 AM Had 3.08 open(14.2@96 spinning), went to 2.73 posi (13.5@101) and 3.73's (13.2@103 some spin).... new heads (12.3@110 dead hook)
67 Plum Jul 5th, 09, 08:50 AM 2.73 posi (13.5@101)
That shows it was making lots of torque.
DOUG G Jul 5th, 09, 08:54 AM With the th350 I only used 1 and 2... shifted about half track and it would 2.0 60' all day :D
wayne33 Jul 5th, 09, 10:26 AM you guys think the 750 dp will be to much carb for my setup?
67 Plum Jul 5th, 09, 10:34 AM I think it will be fine.I have a 650 because I am using the stock intake and the choice was 650 or 800 in a spreadbore carb. With my intake and exhaust the 650 was the better choice.
DOUG G Jul 5th, 09, 01:15 PM 750 will be fine
dawg Jul 5th, 09, 02:01 PM 750 is fine on a low compression 406
I use one on my 406 which is 12:1 compression for street use but switch over to a 950 when im having fun.
