View Full Version : 68 Headliner installation part 1
nev68 Jul 4th, 09, 04:21 AM Fitted a headl iner in my 68 a while ago.
I haven't done this before but I thought I would have a go.
Fitting the head liner is not much fun but it feels good once you have finished.
But while you are heating, stretching, gluing, stretching, clipping over and over you wonder if you'll ever finish.
There were a few nasty words coming out of my mouth from time to time but I am glad I had a go.
Anyway, here's a few pics of the process
I put Dynamat on the ceiling as I replaced the roof (rusted out due to vinyl roof)
Dynamat on the inside
http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n387/nev68/fittingheadliner2.jpg
Started by fitting the roof bows to the head liner and then hanging the headliner (starting from the middle)
http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n387/nev68/fittingheadliner4.jpg
Fitted the bows toward the rear of the car
http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n387/nev68/fittingheadliner8.jpg
Then I clipped the liner along the top of the rear window opening (this is just to get things roughly into position before the really hard work)

nev68 Jul 4th, 09, 04:25 AM My head liner installation continued
Then started clipping the bows from the middle to the front

http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n387/nev68/fittingheadliner13.jpg
http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n387/nev68/fittingheadliner14.jpg
Then clipped the liner to the windscreen frame ( just loosely to get a rough location before stretching etc)
http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n387/nev68/fittingheadliner16.jpg
http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n387/nev68/fittingheadliner17.jpg
Then I started to heat the head liner and stretch to get it closer to the final fit, heating and clipping as I went to hold the liner in position.
http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n387/nev68/fittingheadliner18.jpg
When I got the headliner as tight as I possibly could I started to glue the liner around the edges and clip to keep the liner in position until the glue dried.

After clipping I fitted the Courtesy lamp and sunvisors.

Just have to clean the dirty finger marks off now.
A tip. Fit all the screws for the sun visors and courtsey lamp etc before you fit the head liner.
It makes it much easier to find the correct location a ensure you cut the liner at the right spot to fit these parts.
This is a time consuming laborious job, but I did it by myself. (i.e one person)
It might be easier if you have 2 people but it might be a bit tight and you would have to be good friends as it can get a bit warm while heating the liner and trying to stretch it.
I hope this helps someone out.
DOUG G Jul 4th, 09, 06:34 AM I did mine and it didn't turn out as great as your but my windows were in and what a PITA.
Yours looks great and a very nice write up with pictorial. :beers:
One thing I did was to leave out the sun visors (never used them anyway) and I can't believe how clean it looks without them (yes the screws are under there just in case :D)
Moonpie Jul 4th, 09, 07:39 AM How did you secure the sides? Was that also a clip, stretch and glue?
Looks darn good!
gramps68 Jul 4th, 09, 07:55 AM Nev, looks great ......and tight too! wanna come out and do mine? :D

Hi.
I heated the liner up with a hair dryer (careful not to concentrate heat in one place for too long)
Pulled the liner tight and then clipped, I repeated this 3 or 4 times to get it as tight as I could.
Then I unclipped a section at a time (like up to the stitching of the first panel) , applied contact adhesive heated the liner up again and pulled it tight and clipped to let the contact adhesive cure.

Hey, if I was in the neighborhood I'd come and help you out no problems.
It's just a bit far for me, I don't think I'd get back for work on Monday.;)
I am planning a trip next year though

Hey Doug, It would have been hard work getting that headliner in with the front and back windows in.
Glad mine were out as it helped with ventilation as well.
It gets real hot when you are heating the liner and then stretching and clippng.
Badley Jul 5th, 09, 08:07 AM Nev,
Had you had it out on the road since you installed the Dynamat? How much difference in outside sound did you notice?

It's hard to tell if it makes a difference as the motor / exhaust I have in it now is quite a bit louder than when I started the build.
The roof panel is "dead" if you knock on it now the Dynamat is installed.
Before the dynamat it was sort of a hollow / drum sound if you knocked on the panel.
Moonpie Jul 6th, 09, 02:06 PM Thanks for the info,Nev

Nev, that seems to be the bottom of the earth.....or if you prefer.....the top:D
Like the info on the install.....gotta purchase the headliner and get it in while I still have the windshield out....(or windscreen..and you have tyres too!)
Ausie is on the list of countries to visit!! Still need to retire yet, then lots of travel :beers: hopefully I can get my ride done before I retire!
rogerh Jul 6th, 09, 11:30 PM Nev that looks like a great job. Can you give us any idea how mine binder clips you used? I noticed you had a lot of them and you had a varity of sizes in the binder clips. What size clip worked the best?
Roger
69z28freak Jul 7th, 09, 12:12 AM Hey Nev, how about more pictures of that fine ride of yours? She sure looks sweet. Is it just me or are we seeing more 68 action these days. It seems like it used to be Team 69 Camaro!!!!!! Me likey.

I bought 2 sizes of clips, see photo
http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n387/nev68/clips.jpg
I had about 50 of each size, I think the smaller clips were better.

Thanks for the feedback.
I think it is good to pass on knowledge / experience that might help someone else.
Yep, we have windscreens, tyres, boot (trunk for you?), bonnet (hood for you?)
I visited the US a while ago and liked it.
Hopefully you will think the same if you visit Australia (we almost speak the same language ;))

Thanks.
69 Camaro's are popular here too, but I always liked the '68.
Not sure where to post pics of my car.
Where should I post them?
Heres a couple of shots until I know where they should go.

rogerh Jul 9th, 09, 03:30 PM Nev could you tell us how you handled the headliner around the sail panel tack strips? I have seen on the site where some of the guys have stapled the headliner to the tack strips but when I took my car apart the headliner was just glued to the strips.

Hi Roger,
I stapled mine on the strips, as that's how it was when I removed the original liner.
I had a staple gun we used for some upholstery at home as you need strong staples that will penetrate the wood(?) that is in the strip
I wasn't confident that glue would keep the headliner in position for long

Agreed!! and yup, have to read tech papers that are from places that use all of the above....
I am sure that I will enjoy Australia, my nephew is dating a gal from there, cant recall exactly where, but came to the US for college, then met my nephew....goes back yearly to visit, but sounds like she will stay here....because of him.....
By the way....Very nice ride!!
