My 68 Convertable trim tag reads:
Special Mask
Special Paint
Special Order
This is all the trim tag says.
What can I do to find out more about this car?
Also how do I post A pic on here???

Interesting.

If you have a good, clear pic of the tag you can email it to me and I'll post it if you can't figure out how to do so.

Pat as Dave said, he can post the pics for you or in my signature are ways you can do it yourself. Or become a GOLD Member here and use our photo feature thru our servers. Cant wait to see that tag. Ive never heard of printing like that on a tag, unless its a repo tag someone had made.

al8apexer
Jul 7th, 09, 03:22 AM

that is a very interesting trim tag.

maybe some type of show car or VIP build?

Do you know any history on the car such as past owners or original dealer or where car was located?

Does the car have any original paint on it ?

If it was repainted, sometimes you can still find original paint in trunk or floor pans.

I have another picture of the tag and they look like correct rivets.
This pic looks like pop rivets.

wonder what color it was before it became resale red? the front fenders have massive issues at the bottom, the rest of the car is "driver" quality at best $22,500 is what he wants wonder if he will ever return to this forum?

I bought this Car for the owner. He did have it on consignment with Sunset Classics and they must not have taken if off the web site. But I did not give $22,500. That price I thought was way to high with the work it needs. He must have thought the same thing because he took my offer.

With that out of the way. Do you think that this trim tag might have been added, if so why would someone add A trim tag like this and not one that says it's an rs or ss, it looks like its been on the car forever but I'm no expert.
That last pic Ramairdave put on here for me looks very clear, would you still like to see A better shot of the tag?
Thanks for the help, Patnd2

Looks to be originally Ermine White with a 3 spd automatic. Wonder if could have been one of the test mules for the 350 turbo, available later in 68?

Thanks again Ramairdave for posting the new pic's for me!
Do you think these are just pop rivets or could they be the correct rivets?

RamAirDave
Jul 8th, 09, 09:14 PM
I have no idea since I don't study the 68 tags at all. I have a total of ONE 68 tag on my comp. It's actually very close in VIN sequence to yours (N336xxx compared to your N334).

It has the normal, correct rivets and they are at the bottom of the tag as where yours are near the top of the tag:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b217/RamAirDave/Orange%2068/DSCF2108.jpg

But considering that your tag is very unique, the comparison is likely meaningless.

That has me thinking........I am starting to lean to the not original. But why would someone put this tag on?

There would be nothing on a 68 tag to indicate RS SS or Z/28 so maybe this one was added to attempt to the car special

The tag appears too have been on there for a long time. Very neat tag. Does anyone know what "special mask" means? Has anyone seen the tag on the Estes 68 Z? Does it have a special tag?

Just a regular tag.

JOE58
Jul 9th, 09, 08:56 AM
that sure is a mystery tag.
It does not even look like a 1968 standard blank was used.
The corners are squared off where the originals are chamfered and the rivet holes look like they are in a different location then the original 68 tag.

I once came across a few Donny Osmond records (45s) that simply had "Donny Osmond Puppy Love" written on regular tape, no company lable/logo. I was told it was a demo or test recording. I wonder if this is the same concept on this car. The fact that so many guys here have seen it and can't figure it out is quite puzzling.

Jul 9th, 09, 09:29 AM
You know, I was going to give Mark points for working Donny Osmond into this thread (or any thread) at TC. But then I find it's not the first time DO has been mentioned here. See Post #20 in this thread...

http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?p=806123&highlight=osmond#post806123

Too bad the photo in that thread is of a 67, otherwise we could go full circle with DO, special tags, and the car in this thread.

Maybe Donny Osmond is buried in Hwystar Joe's backyard?

I posted on the CRG thread:
The only thing that comes to mind is that the body was a service part.

Does it have the partial VIN's on the body?

I will try and get at the partial vin's tomorrow and get A pic on the forum.
What is A service body?

The complete rear body was available as a service part. Seldom ordered, but it was an option if the car was in an accident.

That tag looks original. I would leave the tag on the car. Start trying to trace the cars owner history. If you are lucky, you might have a nice piece of GM history. My guess is that this car was used by GM and escaped being sent to the crusher by GM. If it does'nt say it meets federal safety standards, as on regular tag. Could it be legally sold to public, back in the day when new???? special mask, would refer to a paint scheme or stripe.

Jul 10th, 09, 04:51 AM
would be interesting to get a NICB report on it to see if it shows a dealer

yeah, contact your local police dept and tell them you want to make SURE the car hadn't been stolen in its past ...

Thanks 697ibew for the clarification... I took resto4u's & others advice and have started to track down the history though past owners, I can see this is going to take some time. The frist owner back was easy and the second I've located is in Arkansas and waiting to hear back from them now.

would be interesting to get a NICB report on it to see if it shows a dealer
I tried the NICB report online and it told me I didn't have enough #'s in my vin.
I have A friend that works for the police dept. I will talk to him and see what he can do.
What if it came up stolen at some point, is there A chance I could loose my car?????

patnd2
Jul 11th, 09, 05:22 AM
Ok, I tried the NICB report again and it worked somewhat this time, it said Not identified in any theft records or Total loss records

That is some good news. Hopefully you'll be able to track down and communicate with some of the previous owners of the car and get some info. I imagine that it may be a slow process. Good Luck ...Jake :beers:
