i was wondering what type of oil goes into a transfer case for 98 tahoe it has the 5.7 auto the tag on the case says dextron 11e or dextron 111. it looked like gear lube that came out

Dexron. They started that years ago. If you dip your finger in the old stuff it should be a lot thinner than 80-90. If it is 80-90, someone put the wrong stuff in.

thats possibly why the tcase went south...the gear oil is too thick for the tcase pump, and the tolerances are too tight for the gearlube.only takes a short while to cook it like that...jm2c...

You should check with your dealer, as many auto 4x4 transfercases took GM AutotracII fluid, which is a thicker blue fluid.

My 02 does, not sure of yours.
