This tranny doesn't have a prefix code letter following the numbers so it must be an early 68 tranny.....It does however have 2 plugs, one fill plug and another drain plug located on the lower boss on the passenger side of tranny....The tranny is installed so theres no other way I can tell and the car is too loud to hear any whining noise that the rockcrusher makes!

Is this Muncie installed in your Firebird?

A '68 Pontiac utilized the 429 tail extension housing and I have only seen these early M22's with the 584 tail.

I doubt it personally. But you can drop the inspection cover and look inside (that is why they call it an inspection cover). Here is a picture of the allegedly straight gears (they are not) in the allegedly stronger M-22 (it is not) just more reliable for road racing that it was designed for.

Yes, this tranny is installed in my Firebird which is Chevy powered and has a Chevy drivetrain.....If this tranny is an early 68 and has a fill plug and a drain plug wouldn't this be an M-22 as the M-20 and M-21 wasn't equipped with the drain plug till 70 I believe?

It is possible but the only true way to know is to remove the side cover and look at the gears. Over the years many gear swaps have occurred with these transmissions and there is no telling what is in there. If it started out as an M22 and someone trashed it they could have replaced everything with a gear set from an M20 or 21 with a busted case. See where I am going. This scenario was a very common occurence over the 41 plus years that your trans has been around.
