I'm installing my front wire harness (69 Camaro) from AAW and told them I had a 1 wire alt and everything is correct except this one connector for the alt. I'm not even sure I need it except to maybe supply feedback to the interior gauge or something.
Anyway as you see the plug is different than whats on the alt. Its a Jegs 140amp alt. I didn't even connect that plug on the last setup but since it's there I thought I would use it this time.

Question is can I just seperate the wires and install a spade connector on each wire and plug them in and what color wire goes where. It looks like the brown goes back to the firewall connection.

Found out alt does not need anything else hooked up to it. It is self exciting. Just main lead going to output.

If it is a 1 wire you shouldn't need the plug. If you want to plug it in I have a conversion plug that will plug into the alt and the other end will accept the plug from your wire harness. Nice and neat. simple too. You can put new spades on but they won't do anything one way or the other.

Thanks Mark,

I think I will just open the harness back a little and terminate the wires going to the plug and re-tape.

Some documentation I've seen shows the CS internal regulator having a version which gets power internally from the big reg blolt on the back. I think you can insert a connector if you ever decide to. Out of the 5 wires on the connector, only one or two would be used. The brown wire (labled 'L') I believe can be reconnected to your brown GEN lamp wire. Optionally the red wire (I forget the pin lable) would be connected to your horn relay for improved voltage sensing (remote sensing).

I just googled my desktop to find the pin number of the red wire I spoke of but came up with nothing. Next time you're at an auto-parts store check the Help section. You should find a nice weather-pak plug there for less than $10. If nothing else it'll give you the color codes I spoke of if you're curious about remote sensing.

Thanks Dave,

I contacted Jegs and this alt I have needs no other connection but the large red wire. It's self exciting at 880rpm's. What is remote sensing used for?

When current passes through a wire a voltage drop develops due to resistance in the wire. Specifically, the charge wire from the alternator to the battery will develope a voltage drop. With a one-wire setup, the alternator keeps the stud on the back at a steady voltage, but the rest of the vehicle may see a volt or so less due to the voltage drop. When you connect the remote sensing lead to the horn relay for example, the alternator will output whatever it needs to keep the remote sensing point at the regulated voltage. In other words it helps keep the main vehicle power distribution point voltage regulated and overcomes the voltage drop in the charge wire. It can be really beneficial if you have electric fans or other high current loads that can draw down your system voltage.

Thanks for the good info. I may look into that as I will be running dual electric fans, vintage air, stereo, lights.

sense wire won't work with 1 wire alt. Mark
