View Full Version : Replace resistor wire with MSD 6A?

I am going to install an MSD 6A box and was wondering if I need to replace the stock resistor wire that goes to the coil with a solid core wire for the ignition lead to the 6A box. The MSD directions say a ballast resistor is not necessary but then I was thinking that it might help if I have a run-on issue instead of putting in the diode for the charge light. (I have a one wire aftermarket alternator so I assume the system still charges when the motor is spinning down) I would prefer not to have to pull the engine harness and alter it. Also is the stock ignition lead hot while cranking? I assume it is but never checked.

Thanks

You have to replace the resistor wire to get the full voltage needed to run the MSD ignition. Some have gotten away with it....most do not.

The resistor wire is there to make points last longer -the wire to the starter bypasses it when cranking for easier startup. You want a good 12v source for any a/m ignition system reduced voltage to thge MSD box can do lots of weird stuff- burn the box up foul spark plugs and so basically from not enough voltage. if your not running points dump the resistor wire.

Use a AWG 12 wire. The cleanest install is the remove the harness at the firewall, pinch the resistor wire clip and remvoe it from the from the bulkhead. Take the resistor wire out of the clip, solder on the 12 gauge wire and replace the clip. I left my resistor wire in the harness and covered it and the new wire with convoluted tubing. This is a much cleaner install than running it inside to the ignition blade in the fuse box.
