: Electrical nightmare
jjam Jul 7th, 09, 06:47 PM Well let me start first with the headlights. I know and seen this is a common problem. I only have high beams, I've changed the floor switch, I bought a new headlight (thinking maybe the lows were both burnt). But still no low beams. What next? I've read sometimes it is the ground? How can the ground be the problem if the highbeams work?. Thanks
I'll 1st do the lights, then gas guage, then wiper motor, water temp. What next... hope not to much. Thanks again this site is great :hurray:

Badbird Jul 7th, 09, 07:22 PM Check the headlight sockets, check that both headlights are grounded to the radiator support and check that the switch is grounded to the dash....Make sure that the instrument panel is properly grounded, if not, this could cause headlight, dashlight and fuel gauge problems....Also check the socket to the high beam floor switch, it may be getting a bad contact!
wrooster Jul 7th, 09, 09:46 PM I too had this problem, it was the ground wire by the regulator wasn't making contact.
jjam Jul 8th, 09, 10:05 AM Well I check/cleaned both grounds off the head lights, still no low beams. I'll be checking the grounds under the dash/cluster. See where this will take me. Thanks
dnult Jul 9th, 09, 05:52 PM If you want to prove out the grounds, measure the voltage between the lamp's ground terminal and the battery (-) post with the lights on. If you see more than 0.05 volts or so, you've got a bad ground. You can do the same thing on the hot side by measuring between a voltage point (lamp power) and the battery (+) with the lights on. If you see more than 0.05V you've got a bad connection in the power circuit somewhere.
Is there any chance that the lamp power connectors have had their wires rearranged?
77thor Jul 10th, 09, 07:19 AM I had this problem too, but my solution was not electrical.....
I pulled back the carpet from the dimmer switch and the switch & lights worked OK.
Then I re-installed carpet over the switch and guess what, no low-beams.
It turned out that the switch was getting hung up on the rubber carpet grommet.
I removed the grommet, re-installed carpet and everything worked.
It looks like the dimmer switch hole in the aftermarket replacement carpeting is off a bit.
I'm continuing to struggle with my gas guage, then on to wiper motor/switch... sound familiar?
dukemd66 Jul 10th, 09, 09:17 AM This may seem silly...but I believe you can install a light upside down. I remember years ago I replaced a light and everyone was flicking their high beams at me and I could not figure out why....friend pointed out the head light was upside down. Turned it around and no more upset people driving at me.
When you hit the button any change in intensity of light?

Yeah, I got one. Take the readings I mentioned above and tell me what you measure. It'll save a hellova lot of guessing and part swapping.
...measure the voltage between the lamp's ground terminal and the battery (-) post with the lights on. ...measure between a voltage point (lamp power) and the battery (+) with the lights on...more than 0.05volts in either case and you've isolated a bad connection.
keithl1967 Jul 11th, 09, 07:54 PM I had numerous electrical gremlins sevral years ago--back when my car wa smy daily driver...I chased down lead after lead for months...
Turned out all of it was caused by a loose nut on my J-block---right behind the battery...I tightened that nut, and have not had an electrical issue since...about 10 years or so, now!
