I am having problems with 1968 brake lights. The bulbs (all 1157) are good because when I turn on the headlights all the rear lights turn on.

Problems:

-Left brake light and blinkers work but the right brake and right blinker do not.

Question?

When I press the brake should the outer or inner rear lights come one? Same question for the rear blinkers, outer or inner rear lights?

Could be a bad T/S switch. Chek with test light that you have power to right side t's brake lite wire. Check the wiring diagram for color code, it's not brown or black. the same filament and bulb is brake light and turn signal. Could also be bad ground.

I will try this, I also forgot to mention this was a 68 Rally Sport.

Emergency flashers use the same brake light filament.

So on RS models the inner most light is used for brake, turn signal, and flasher?

Yes, both bulbs on each side will flash. Poke the brake/signal wire with a grounded test light and see if it lights it up with the signal on. If so, run a cheater ground wire to the ground piece on the socket not working correctly and if that doesn't make it work, just replace the socket.

:beers:

I have the same problem

Before I attempt to take apart the stearing column and replace the Turn Signal Switch, I wonder if the problem could be a bad fuse. Keep in mind only the rear passenger brake and turn signal do not work. The lights do come on when the headlights are on. The drivers side rear brake and turn signal works.

Jiggle /pull up on the turn signal stick to see if left side works.
As I suggested earlier, emer flashers use the same bulb filaments as the brakes.
Do they work?

Yes, stop lights are fused - power is red wire to f/box, brake light power to brake sw is white to t/sig sw to yellow wire for left stop light.

no the emergency flashers do not work. FYI... all the turn signal lights work on the dash, including the emergency flashers, just do not light up on the rear passenger side.

Front emer flashers work?

I will have to check on that and get back to you this evening. I am pretty sure they work on the front and driver side rear, just not the rear passenger. The rear passenger lights are the only ones giving me any problems. If this is the case what would this mean as far as diagnosing the problem?

If emerg LR light ain't working, either bad ground, not likely since taillight is working, bad socket, as in the contacts, the little nubbies in the bottom, bad bulb, or no power getting to the yellow wire; LR.

I replaced the sockets and checked the grounds and the bulbs are good. I think the problem is no power getting to the passenger rear brake and turn lights. Tested with a lamp probe and this is correct. Power is there when the headlights are on but not when braking or turn signal. Driver rear works fine.

My bad, RR brake/emerg is dark green. Power comes from brk sw to t/sig to body connector behind drvr kick panel to rear lights.

ok, so Power to right rear brake light is a DARK GREEN wire. The signal flow is from the BRAKE SWITCH, then to the TURN SWITCH, then to BODY CONNECTOR. Since my left rear brake works I am assuming the BRAKE SWITCH is OK. Next logical problem area to check could be the TURN SWITCH or the BODY CONNECTOR. Does this sound right to you?

Yes. With no turn selected, both brake lights should work together through the t/sig switch.
Emergency flasher circuit bypasses the t/sig switch and uses the same filament as brake switch/lights.

So I can test the emergency signals to see if they work. If they dont work then chances are that the problem is not in the turn signal switch since the emergency flashers bypass the turn signal switch. Does this logic sound correct?

I have a 68 Camaro. Need help. Years ago I replaced the sockets beacuse of various problems withthe tail lights. All seeemed to be ok until this weekend. The passenger side brake light works but not the driver side. I changed the bulb even though it looked ok. I now noticed when I turn head lights on both rear lights work, but neither side shows brake light when I press brake pedal. Any help appreciated.

By the way, saw up close the 2010 Camaro SS in Royal Blue, really sharp, better than I expected, nice sound. Makes me think about trading up after this day with the light problem.

You might jiggle the turn signal lever, check stop light fuse, or check brake light switch for broken wires or plunger stuck on brake light switch or could be a broken brake light switch.

okay I will check these things. I looked at the fusebox and looks like all the fuses are really really old. It looks like the original fuse box, is there are new fuse set I could order that has all the correct fuses and values or do I need to find the values for each one and individually order them. I do have the 68 Camaro wiring diagrams that list the fuse values/type.

John, the post I wrote was intended for Paul, but you can use it also. Glass SGC fuses can be bought at your local parts store.

Also John, if you have one stoplight working, I imagine the fuse is good, just the wire circuit, er, RR light circuit is faulty on yours. Follow your schematic from the brake switch to the RR light since the LR stoplight works.
