Is the one your buddy has a Turbo 200, or a 2004R. If it is a Turbo 200 I would not bother with it. If it is a Turbo 2004R it is a 4 speed overdrive transmission. The Turbo 200 is a weaker 3 speed than the Turbo 350 and not worth putting in your Camaro.

I just replaced my Turbo 350 with the 2004R and love it...

The Turbo 350 was ok on the freeway with the stock 2:73 rear end gears, but I wanted more low end so I rebuilt my rear end with an Eaton Posi and 3:73 gears.

The 2004R will give you the best of both worlds. It will allow a lower rear end gear and will allow you to drive on the freeway without the engine turning too many RPM's.

I am turning about 2800 RPM's at 80 MPH, but if I drop it into 3rd gear (which would be 1:1 or the equivelent to a Turbo 350) it revs up to about 4,000 RPM.
There is much debate between the 2004R and the 700R4, but I went with the 2004R due to ease of replacement. If your buddy has one he will give you a deal on I would go for it. You will need a different crossmember for the 200, or 700 but with the 700 R4 you will need to shorten the drive shaft. The 2004R will bolt in with no modification of the drive shaft or yoke.

Bowtie Overdrives has all of the parts you will need such as cross member, TV cable,shifter detent kit, and wiring for the lock up torque convertor.

The 200 4R has a lower 1st gear, and an OD 4th. So even with your current rear gearing (whatever that may be), the 200 will come off the line better, and cruise at much lower RPM. As Todd noted, you can choose to go with a lower rear gear for even better off the line performance, and still have reasonable cruise RPM.

2004R Gear Ratios
1st = 2.74
2nd = 1.57
3rd = 1.0
4th = .67
Reverse = 2.07

TH350
1st = 2.52
2nd = 1.52
3rd = 1.00
Reverse = 1.93

With a 200 4R and 4.11s, my RPMs at 70 MPH dropped 300 RPM as compared to my Turbo 350 and 3.08s.
I would invest in the Bowtie Overdrives Crossmember. http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata....php?ITEMID=56 It utilizes the stock holes for the crossmember and you can drop the pan without having to remove the crossmember.

Actually, one has the 404, the other has the 409. I think they are just foundry marks, nothing about application, that is on the data plate. You can get some info from the vin stamped along the pan boss too.
