DJD,

A while back, I asked for a site where fuel additives can be made from paint chemicals. I've been trying to locate the topic, but cant seem to find it. is it possible for you to send me that link?

With the way fuel prices are going up, I could really use that extra savings!

Thanks,

Jerry

Jerry,

Look up "toluene" in the search engine on this site or the Team Chevelle site and you'll get some discussion on the topic. You can also enter "home brew octane booster" in your web search engine and you'll get several sites outside of this forum. I've been experimenting with toluene and have had pretty good luck.

Just a side note....read the MSDS for Toluene...I would highly recommend wearing a respirator when working with it! I worked with it back in the late 80's to clean out plastic injection molds/tooling. It can be pretty vicious stuff...

Look up pdq67's member number and include it in your search. I don't have any special tools for finding old threads.

You know, I'm up on a lot of the hazardous material stuff and what people fail to realize is THAT IF YOU CAN'T EAT IT OR DRINK IT, IT'S HAZARDOUS!!!! End of conversation!!!

Just use some common since messing with the stuff, or for that matter any hazardous stuff, and do a little homework to protect yourself and I figure you will be fine, or at least I figure I would if I was messing with it!!

PS., and just do a search on the web on how many people have ACTUALLY DIED from Dioxin and you may learn something.

And one of my pet peaves is that our GOV. has known for MANY, MANY years that there is not a whole lot of difference between asbestosis and fiberglassosis, So I'm just waiting for the Lawyers to run the asbestos thing into the ground AND then start on fiberglass!!!

And I got the scientific report on this stuff saved on my machine at work!!!

About the only thing that really bothers me is radiation b/c you can't see, feel or even know it is killing you until it's too late....

Yeah, but you have to remember that a TNT is COMPLETELY different from Toluene.

Toluene can cause dermatitis, so be sure to wear hand protection (neoprene gloves) if working with it, and as stated earlier, be sure to wear an organic respirator.

Get the green "Nitrile" gloves, they will last longer and resist solvents and fuels best.

I use them in my solvent washer.

I work with nasty chemicals every day and use this data base to investigate any I'm not up to date on;

http://chemfinder.cambridgesoft.com/

Use the free search areas - you don't have to join.

Type in the chemical you are using and scroll down to the MSDS (material safety data sheet) listings. These sheets are kept up to date and will give you the low-down on how nasty the stuff is and what PPE (personal protective equipment) to wear when working with the chemical.
Extra safety hint: Make sure to read the permeabilty (penetration through the pores) of the chemical through the gloves you are wearing! Some chemicals will 'soak' through a glove in minutes and not effect the glove surface. You will then be in contact with the chemical. Always use a new set of gloves for each use and double glove if in doubt of the time you will be in contact with the chemical.

Toluene is a common aromatic that is added along with zylene to certain pump gasolines to make racing gas, among other things. It is considered harmful in certain ways, but is also present in pump gas.

Go to www.inccn.net/jackstandslinks.htm (http://www.inccn.net/jackstandslinks.htm) at my tech link sight .......there are at least four links on fuels and esp this additive as well as how to make your own.

Here is an excerpt from one of my articles on this subject

Do octane boosters really work?

The type of octane boosters that come in relatively small cans such as 10, 12 or even 16 oz and usually made up of small amounts of aromatics, light lubricants and engine cleaner do not appreciably affect the octane rating of your tank of gasoline! It’s a waste of money for significantly boosting your tanks overall octane.

A good home made brew of higher-octane gasoline can be made from pump gas and toluene/toluene or xylene! Racing gasoline has significantly higher proportions of these chemicals in content than regular pump gas. Both of these powerful aromatics can appreciably raise the octane rating of your tank of fuel and do so at a reasonable cost if mixed properly. We all know that racing gasoline is expensive and usually is an overkill for most street driven high performance engines. Aviation gasoline or AVGAS is NOT made for your application with extremely differing base formulas that will cause lean conditions for most street/performance engines and will not have the additive packages that you desire, regardless of it’s attractive cost and availability! I don’t recommend it at all for you octane junkies, whereas it can easily cause catastrophic failures. It also does not have the same BTU content as well!

Here is a good table of common chemicals that can help you our making your own high-octane concoction. I recommend researching this subject profusely before starting your own chemical mixing experiment. There are plenty of articles on the Internet on this very subject and caution is advised.

Name (R+M)/2 Cost %mix/92 10% 20% 30%

Toulene/114 $2.50/gal 94.2 96.4 98.6

Xylene/117 $2.75/gal 94.5 97.0 99.5

For what he thought was H2O
Was H2SO4

Be careful!
