I have a 68 convertable and just received my new glass from Classic Industries. Three pieces have white lettering and the third has black. Called them and they said OER changed vendors. They suggest removing the lettering with a razor blade. The letters are silk screened on the glass and I am worried about scratches. It wont do much for origional without the lettering. Does anyone know a chemical that can remove the lettering without damage to the glass?

Ron,

To answer your question, I would try a product called "goof-off". Never used it on glass but very impressed with its ability to dissolve adhesives.

On a personal note, I would send the glass back to Classic. It's not your fault they changed vendors and the product purchased does not meet your expectations. You did not spend that amount of money to have to alter the item.

Rich, Thanks for the info and I'll see if I can find the product. I appreciate the quote to a old Marine. Thanks, Ron

also try some very very fine steel wool (lot 000) and lots of water. It will not scratch the glass and should remove it. If you are not comfortable with that you can buy a mild abrasive glass cleaner for light scratches from NAPA for about ten bucks. It attaches to your drill and comes with directions. Good luck, I don't think I would be sending them back over that, too much hassle and if the glass looks good it is an easy fix.

My back glass and rear quarter glass all had 3 layers of window tint on them when I got the car, it would have taken me months with a razor blade and soapy water as suggested by the local glass shops to clean them up. Instead I broke out some aircraft paint stripper I had and used that on it, worked like a charm no damage to the glass and in about 7-10 minutes it would soften up and lift off one layer of tint. 3 times around on each piece cleaned them right up. If you go this route do like i did put some on the lowest portion of the glass below the weather stripping position and let it sit for a while to make sure it will not etch the glass, if its all good use it on the paint if your going to keep them.

Ron,
You should be able to find it at your local Home Depot.
