: Courtesy light nightmare

What could possibly be causing my console courtesy light and my overhead courtesy light to be turning on independently? The light on the console comes on immediately when the door is opened. But the overhead light comes on only when the door is opened and the engine is running. Does anyone have a clue?:o

Those two lights should be on the same circuit and share the ground in the door switches. Does it operate the same way from both doors? If it's OK on one side I check the ground at the other switch. If it works the same on both doors I'd look for a wiring modification to the dome light.

Great advice. Right now it's not malfunctioning, but when it does I'll check the other door. And, a wiring modification before I got it is a real possibility.
Also, I read some other "post" that said that they are wired to a "T" connection in the trunk. Where would I start looking for that connection when I pop my trunk open? Thanks!

After careful study of the wiring diagram in the AIM, I'll confirm Steps is correct. The white (ground) is "T'ed" in the trunk at or near the trunk connector located under the left hinge. The orange (hot) is "T'ed" near the ignition switch. Another thought I had this morning is how does it work when you twist the headlight knob? I think this might help to Isolate the problem further.

The headlight knob simply by passes the the door switches.
There are several old post where ppl think they have had a fault and it has turned out to be the knob has been turned....I also made this simple mistake yrs ago.

Mine was a ground issue... They just came on at one cruise night and I couldn't get them to go off. I got them to stop by jiggling the wires under the dash, It happenened once or twice more and after more jiggling it hasn't been back (luckily).

As John was saying, ground issues can cause some weird behavior - especially with lights.
