: ZZ4 Headers
CRANE'S68 Jan 15th, 03, 03:37 PM I just purchase a zz4 crate motor for my 68 camaro. I've seen a lot of different thoughts on what headers will and won't fit - but I'm still confused. I'd like not to have to dent some new ceramic coated headers to make them fit. Has any one out there run down this path? The car has power steering. Thanks.
ZZ430DropTop67RS Jan 15th, 03, 03:45 PM Yeah, use the Hooker Super Comp's 1 3/4.
Sure, other cheaper headers like Dynomax will work pretty good, but #6 sparkplug boot is a little close to the header.

joe clance Jan 15th, 03, 07:26 PM 1 3/4 hooker supercomps will allow the "D" port to flow into the header without obstruction. However, you will probably have to massage the pipe at the power steer unit due to the large diameter pipe and tight fit. If a smaller diameter header is available that accomodates the "D" port, you may be able to install without dimpling the pipes.
good luck

69RS/SS350 Jan 15th, 03, 08:30 PM I just installed the 1 3/4 Super Comps on my car with no dimpling needed. They are very well designed. However I did the install while installing the motor, I am thinking it may be a little trickier if the motor is already in the car.

TOMS69 Jan 15th, 03, 08:50 PM I agree with all above.I've had the super comps on my ZZ4 since April of 1999 and I never regret buying them.Fit great and good access for the plugs.Use part #2131 Or 2131-1 if you want ceramic.

gheatly Jan 16th, 03, 06:29 AM You can get the Hooker pn 2131 headers from Jet Hot directly with their new sterling coating for $590, including shipping. Summit sells the pn 2131-1 coated headers for $510, excluding shipping.
I would highly recommend getting coated headers, otherwise, the tubes will turn to a rust brown color in about a year. I haven't found a paint that will stand up to header heat.
MoeSS396 Jan 16th, 03, 11:15 AM I dont think the zz4 has a D port but im probally wrong. Those are the new fastburn heads that have the D port. Any headers will work as long as it isnt a d port exhaust shape. I personally prefer cheap headers and have jet-hot or some one coat them for me after I have trial fitted them.
joe clance Jan 16th, 03, 03:19 PM All ZZ4;s = "D" port exhaust no Question!
ramcda Jan 16th, 03, 03:33 PM I bought a pair of the Thorley Tri-Y headers part # DTE-376Y1 for my ZZ4. They list them as being for a 67-69 Camaro, but I didn't realize at the time that I needed headers for a D Port exhaust. Will these headers work ok with the D Port? It appears that the pipes are slightly larger than the ports, but they are not D shaped. Will they work?
CRANE'S68 Jan 16th, 03, 04:20 PM Thanks for all the input. I definitely now will be going with Hooker. I checked out their website just now and saw they have a new shortie header out that they say works on all angle plug small blocks (#2466HKR) and gives you more clearance. I have 2" drop Hotchkis springs on the front, so I'm kind of concerned about the clearance. Also, I think Hooker's new shortie has 1 5/8" tubes.
Any input on clearance issues with the supercomps or the use of 1 5/8" tubes on a ZZ4. Thanks.
gheatly Jan 17th, 03, 05:34 AM One thing to remeber about shorty headers - they offer no scavanging benefits. You need very close to equal length primary pipes to get the added benefit. You will get the benefit of reduced back pressure with shorties, but not the significant amount of additional torque scavanging produces on the bottom end.
gheatly Jan 17th, 03, 12:30 PM I used Hooker Competition Series (the 1 5/8 version) on my ZZ3. The L98 aluminum head also has a "D" port and the headers fit fine. Fel-pro sells a gasket for the "D" port heads and I placed it over the header flange and there was no interference.
67killerb Jan 17th, 03, 12:31 PM I put the Hooker Super Comps, ceramic coated on my ZZ4 in a 67 coupe, no power anything and they come within 1/8" of the steering box shaft.
