View Full Version : HELP!!! Crank Key Too Wide????????

ok guys heres the deal. i just got my motor put together and getting ready to do the timing and pre set the valves when i remember oh yea i need to get some crank keys. i go to the local o'reilys and pick up a pair. i get to the shop and go to put them in and what do you know. THEY ARE TOO F*$&#@$ WIDE http://www.camaros.net/forum/mad.gif

you guys have any ideas on whats wrong, did i get the wrong ones or are they always wider than the slots in the crank. the package says they are universal for small block chevy. its a 87 350 crank (brand new)

They may have given you the wrong ones, but I don't remember Chevy changing the key width. They don't just fall into the slot in the crank though. You have to line them up and gently tap them into place. I use a rubber mallet because if you flatten out the top of the keys you'll have trouble getting the balancer on later.
