I have a 68 Z28 that I am putting back to original. The original matching VIN number is long gone, but I recently found a correct MO block but it has the incorrect vin number. I sent it to the machine shop for rebuild and they told me there are some hairline cracks across the deck from being overheated somewhere down the road. They said they could weld the cracks but would have to deck the block to complete the repair. If the block was decked, there would no longer be proof that it was a correct MO block and would be no different than a 327 or 350. I was told that restamping was an option, but several viewers said that was a bad idea. What are my options?
thanks.

I was under the impression that decking could be done w/o taking the number pad off.

I am on the understanding that the machine shaves off the entire layer of the block and therefore, the pad goes with it

Have them stop the micro milling machine just before the pad and then set the block up in a Bridgeport mill and finish the deck just to the end of the head gasket surface, leaving the pad original. I have done this before and it works.
Are the cracks on the passenger side? If they are just the drivers bank, have them leave the passenger side alone.

Really??
Can you explain how?
This sure would've saved the identity of thousands of original engine blocks.

Most shops don't like to try and save the numbers as its a PITA for them... but if a special block they'll do it.....for a price
