Does anyone know if the locking plates are different between standard and tilt columns? I have a column out of a 69 firebird and want to put it in my camaro. I cannot get the locking plate depressed far enough to get the locking ring on. Even without the spring and turn signal cancelling cam in place the lock plate will not sit low enough. I am not sure the lock plate is original to a tilt column. Any thoughts?

I also have a power steering cooling tube from the same 69 firebird. Does anyone know its original mounting position (I am thinking it was either in front of or under the radiator)? I can find no information.

Thanks for the help.

The shaft lock plates are not the same between tilt columns and standard columns.

Are you sure that you have the lock plate installed in the correct orientation on the steering shaft? The hub in the plate is offset. The offset in the hub should be pointing into the steering column - not toward the driver. The round wire ring will end up sort of buried in a recess in the plate.

I found drawing of a 1968 Firebird power steering cooler pipe. I would think that it is the same as the 1969.

Thanks, Jim. I am sure the orientation is correct, so it must be the plate. Does anyone know where to get a lock plate for a 69 with a tilt column?

The cooler tube looks identical, so I think you are correct there.

Much appreciated.
