What are the advantages/disadvantages to running the 6" rods when building a 383 ?

I just finished building my 383 with the 5.7 rods. It is my understanding the major drawbacks with the 6.0 rods are clearances. You have to be extra careful with machine work and some thought has to go into your cam selection as well so it doesn't create a clearance problem. Perhaps someone else has more experience with the 6.0 rods.

Hi Nasty69,

It has been my experiences that any time you can use longer rods, do it. Now you may have to releave the block to get the clearance you need. But the bennefits from having the piston dwell is worth the effort. Its obviously up to you, and 5.7 rods work great. I helped with a 383 with 5.7s, and it pushed a legit 450HP and in his 84 Camaro and lots of wheel-spin ran mid to high 12s in the quarter.

Good Luck- BitsNPieces

I think with the longer rods, you will get a better stroke to rod ratio. Meaning longer dwell and better RPM's. Lot of dirt track and trans am racing like to have 1:8 ratio. Like what the 302 was built for.
