: Ever heard of the early 1968 "Chevrolet Sports Dept" promotion?

I have been doing some research on 1968 Camaro advertising and have found some very interesting promotions from February and April 1968.

The Feb 1968 promotion introduces the new "Corvette Colors" and discusses the "Chevrolet Sports Department" in reference to Chevy's Super Sports for that year. They had promotional events that included US athletes promoting the cars.

Has anyone else heard of this promotion?

I have a jpg of the logo for this promo--it is a redline tire on a mag wheel with the words "Chevrolet Sports Department" around it...

I've never seen that particular item, but I'm very aware of their advertizing promotions in the late 60's for the Sports Dept.
I have a copy of the 1969 brochure (somewhere) that I picked up at Chapman Chevrolet in 1969.

Chevrolet was the official sponsor of NCAA Football for quite a while in the 60's.
They had special advertizing tied into the football season and had full page adds in most local papers (specially in college towns ;) ) to link their offerings to the NCAA support they provided.
Here is a link to one for sale - http://www.themotorbookstore.com/chspdefor19.html

The last add I saw was for the 1969 season. They were the sponsor for this "100th Season" and distrubuted a special advertizing hand-out at many big games that was included in the game program.
I do have a pretty crude photocopy of that brochure, but no original.

I have also seen the banners displayed in the dealerships on 'eBain' several times.
They look like this;
11309

Typical of the advertizing campaigns during those years, Chevrolet was trying to tap into the market for these upwardly mobile future car buyers

I'm sure the CRG has a lot more info, but have never seen it on the site.

Related to this topic, my g.f. is finance mgr for a dealership in town. Last week she had a customer in her office and they were talking about the new Camaro. He told her he was from Detroit and did advertising for the Camaro (I beleive the first gens). Told her I'd like to speak to him about those days!

I consider my self pretty "Camaro History Smart" but was also surprised to see that the 1968 Camaro was part of a large "Hugger" promotion for February 1968.

I had understood that the 1969 Camaro was the first real promotion of the Camaro as a "Hugger". I guess not!

February 1968 was "Hugger Month" and Chevrolet advertised all across the US for it. That month they released Rallye Green and "three Corvette Colors" "all in deep Luxury-car (sic) Magic-Mirror finishes!"

I posted above about a customer my g.f. had that worked in the advertisment dept of G.M. in Detroit, I asked her more about this and she said the guy started working on the Camaro ad campaign in 1965.... may need to pick his brain.
