: Garage Air conditioners
IDS_Bill Jul 28th, 09, 10:06 AM So I have not done anything on my car in over a month since it is HOT outside. It's supposed to be 115 today!!! I hate leaving the car in the garage and would LOVE to store my dive gear in the cabinets also but it is too hot for that. Does anyone have any suggestions for what kind of air conditioner works best for the garage? I have no windows so a window unit is out. For a 2 car garage - how many BTUs should I be looking at?
Thanks for any help!

I've seen window mount types of units mounted through the wall before. Seems pretty simple to cut a hole and mount it in place. Not exactly the most attractive solution, but probably the least expensive. Most of those types are advertised as suited for "x" amount of square footage room size, I don't know how that rates as BTU's.
clwilcox33 Jul 28th, 09, 10:15 AM I'm mounting a window unit directly in the wall.
ceweaver Jul 28th, 09, 10:19 AM My uncle had a window unit mounted thru a wall - from his shop into a small office.
IDS_Bill Jul 28th, 09, 10:22 AM Yeah that is an option but I would probably be single if I tried cutting a hole in the wall. We are in an adobe-style house and the air conditioner would be right by the front door since there is only one wall option. (see picture for type of walls). Anyone know anything about duct-less air conditioners?

clwilcox33 Jul 28th, 09, 10:37 AM Yeah, window unit is a bad idea with that one lol. There are some other portable AC units, I remember using some in a couple different computer data centers and they worked really well. Might just try doing some google searches and see what you can come up with.

BK69 Jul 28th, 09, 10:47 AM Bill, I have built sunrooms and sometimes finish out bonus rooms above garages for customers with limited access to existing HVAC. What I have used is a split system made by Carrier and I believe another maker called Goodman, you might can look up on their websites for more info. These split systems use a ductless interior unit that houses both the evaporator coil and the fan along with a remote control for setting the temperature. The outside condensor is about the size of a small suitcase, you will have to run the refrigerant piping along with a flexible condensation line out the wall. The interior unit is hung on the wall, might be able to find a good area to hang it so that the pipes come out a area that is not seen or where there is very little piping. Hope that makes sense. I had my friend that installs them, install one on a job recently in a garage that we enclosed and I believe you could have hung meat in there it was so cold, That particular unit was a heat pump so he could heat it in the winter also.
clwilcox33 Jul 28th, 09, 10:48 AM Forgot about the garage journal site. More specifically, they have a heating and a/c section:

Those are looking like the ticket. I am hoping that the 24,000 BTU would be adequate considering the brutal heat in the summer. I am going to insulate the aluminum garage door to try to help also.
Arai Jul 28th, 09, 12:12 PM lol....why can't you just set the window unit on a 5 gallon bucket in the corner with a drain line going outside??
HwyStarJoe Jul 28th, 09, 12:26 PM Those split indoor\outdoor units work great. My father just put one in an addition on the back of his house in SC. They're pretty quiet and efficient. And remote controlled!
The plywood shanty full of holes that I lived in in Afghanistan had one of those for heat and A/C and it worked just fine for the 32'x14' building. But it ran non-stop during the hot months.
click Jul 28th, 09, 12:55 PM are you on city water or your own well? If you have your own water, get a swamp chiller setup :D
insomniac2k1 Jul 28th, 09, 01:50 PM Minisplits work great. They are extremely efficient. Mine was EER 11 i believe. They are even better now. The only caveat that i could see from using one in the garage is that they do not bring in fresh air (if wanted). They recirculate the air that is in the garage already. That could be a bad thing. Other than that, they are great!

.Bad75. Jul 28th, 09, 02:14 PM Im going to follow this closely and i hope some ratings on the units cuz its hot in the garage here as well lol.
insomniac2k1 Jul 28th, 09, 04:15 PM Because A/C units produce as much heat as they do cold air. The heat needs to be distributed outside in order to keep the inside cool :P

Yea I know......I was being sarcastic. I need something for my shop as well......its 103 outside right now.
JohnZ Jul 28th, 09, 07:38 PM I have a 42,000-BTU Mitsubishi "Mr. Slim" mini-split system in my 2600-sq. ft. garage, and it cools it with no problem; also scary-quiet, both inside and outside. :)
