When putting full quarters on a car where the old quarters have been cut off right at the roof to quarter seam should the new quarters go under the roof skin or over the roof skin. It looks like under to me, but if just wanted to double check and see if anyone has any pix to offer up.

Thanks!

Original is spot welded to the body under the roof skin.

I'll send you a couple of pic's.

You may have a little bit of room to tuck a trimmed lip under. Then you will have to weld and massage it.

I was able to tuck an entire lip under the roof skin, but you really have to make sure you get all of the spot welds drilled out. There are spot welds on the inside and outside. Once you can work a putty knife up under the roof skin pretty easily you should be able to get the qtr under there.

GREAT INFO! Just one more thing to clear up... what do you do to remove the little strip of the old 1/4 panel left on the drip rails? I see that they are spot welded up to those drip rails. Should I take a small drill bit and drill those out and then fill those holes in later when I plug weld in the new 1/4 panel?

that little strip is spot welded to the drip rail piece which is attached to the sail panel area. if you look under the drip channel from the quarter window area you should see the spot welds you can drill out. I have a pic of mine if you need it.

Yes--I did notice those spot welds, but was wondering if that was the only way/best way to go. If you could post the pics, that would be great too. Love the pics! (worth a 1000 words {{at least}}, on a Camaro resto!)

Would you say those spot welds are 3/16" in diam?

For the drip welds I drilled mine out, but also had to carefully use a cutting wheel to grind down a bit of the origional panel from the drip area to completely remove the sheet metal from that area.

I think its the best way (drilling out the spot welds and removing that lit bit of the old quarter), but have yet to do one.. so what do I know ; ) hard to see the holes I drilled in these pix but there was probably about 6-8 of them on each side. The srip you see still there is the flange from the drip rail mounted to the sail panel area.

If you have your new quarters you can see what the piece you'll be removing should look like..

don't mind the slice in the roof on the driver side (unforunately this car was a convertible for a short time)

I think I lightly ground the spot welds on the drip rail section and then took a screw driver and proceeded to use it as a chisel and very carefully pry that small piece out. I should never have treated that screw driver like that:)
