I am about to wind up with a 1968 302ci DZ series motor as a result of a trade and I am wondering what a complete carb to pan running DZ engine with the original single point distrubitor and holley 780 vac secondary carb that is stamped with a DZ suffix on the air horn, standard bore is worth and to whom it would be of more value as I dont have a targeted need for it.
I dont wanna butcher it up for a hot rod app as the late model truck blocks are far better suited for this and dont have the classic worth.
To be stright up honest I am trying to turn this to some one who really needs it and can afford to pay me what it is worth.

Any help in this area would be greatly apprecatied.

THANKS,,,BILL

If there is a VIN number on the pad by the DZ stamp or by the oil pump, it might be possible to reuninte it with it's original car.

Welcome to TC Bill. If it is for a 1968 Z/28 it is not a "DZ" engine. That would be an "MO" code engine.

Can you see a partial VIN stamped on the pad or by the oil filter? Can you post a picture of the DZ stamp and/or VIN?

Bill;
As others are saying - you will need more information on the engine block before it can be determined if it is a '1968 302 "Z"' engine.
The DZ designation on the Carburetor "air-horn" is not one of them ...
You will need the block Casting Number and Date
The assembly Suffix and Partial VIN number from the front pad
and the numbers from the engine internals to be sure it is as advertized

It is very easy to fake/restamp/replace some of these identifiers for a savy engine builder - so you need to confirm they are present and original before a valid estimate of worth can be made.
Do Not shell out any money for this engine for it's value as a "Z" engine until you can confirm - otherwise you just paid more for a 4" block than was necessary ;)

I fam pretty sure there was only one. I think the Car And Driver car the "Blue Maxi" was referred to as that in the article.

Actually, if you want to get technical, RPO Z29 WAS used from 1976 through 1981 on the Chevy Monza!! It's what's called the "GT Sport" (or Spyder) option, and included:

- BR70-13C steel-belted radial ply blackwall tires (with option for raised white lettering)
- Sport suspension
- Blackfront and rear bumper rub strips
- Black headlights frames
- Black windshield, belt, side and rear window moldings (not available with black exterior)
- Black painted body sill (also not available with black exterior)
- Black door and centre pillar louvers
- Black painted taillight frames
- Body colour front air dam and rear spoiler
- Spyder emblems on front facia, rear lock cover and sport steering wheel horn button insert)
- Black sport mirrors (LH remote, RH manual)
- Rear Spoiler and body stripes with Spyder lettering outlined in accent body colour
- Spyder hood decal
- Black painted Rally II wheels with bright trim rings and centre caps

Okay, now we can get back to the original thread...

:D

If the engine does have the "MO" stamp, and, the partial vin, and, the block stamps are real, if you sell this engine, your #1 best buyer would be the individual with the car this engine came out of. If it still exists. The original "MO" engine would increase the value of the car $10K to $15k. If the car doesn't exist, somebody with a 1968 Z/28 W/O their original "MO" block would probably like to buy it just so they could say they have the "period correct motor".

:)Ed, That was a Z29, huh? My folks had an '80, a white one just as you described. Looked kinda cool but alas, had a 2.5L Iron Duke...er whatever ya call'em  Good for 35 mpg tho:yes:

Ok, back to the original thread.....

Assuming the engine is a legit DZ motor and all the original components are there and correct, I thought the price range was around $4-5K for a complete and dated motor. The DZ 302 only came in 69 Z28's, but it could be dated from late 68 to go in an early 69 car. Pictures of the casting numbers, dates and stampings would help to verify it's originality. And yes, if you can find the partial VIN on the engine you might be able to get more if you can find the original car it came from and reunite them.

Hey Guys I am back to thank you all for your input and advice and in regards to the goof up on the posting I did not see the z29 until it was posted and I am sorry for the goof up.
Insofar as the car being a real deal DZ car we still have whats left of it and the origonal paper work states that it was bought from the chevy dealer in glen burnie maryland named Gladding and is on Gov. Richie Hwy. and at that time a rolls royce dealer was right next door as I was there the day the car rolled off of the truck from anchor motor freight and watched my next door friend when he picked up the title and paid cash for the car (I am 54 yrs old) and can still remember the first time he let her loose on patapcisco ave and stoll place in brooklin park.
This car has been a part of my life for its entire life and that is why I am to inherit the engine and tranny.
There is NO question about this being a real deal DZ 302 motor.
Again I want to extend a sincere thank you and I really mean it to all of you who stepped up to help so now I can move foward in my quest to find a new home for this motor and I got a pretty good idea what to ask for it.
In as far as the rest of the car, it will be interred containing my good friend who recently succuomed to cancer but the deal was made well in advance that the motor and trans would come to me and be resold to keep the spirit of my buddy alive in a small way.
Again , thanks to all you guys and now I can call the potential new owner with a number and finish this out..
Take care , stay fast and enjoy it for now cuz when it goes, it is gone..

Good luck with the sale of the motor and a heck of a way to pay tribute to your friend and his car! A lot of guys hate to see an original car/motor broken up, but in your situation it sounds like the car has no choice so it would be great to sell the motor to somebody with a real Z28 that could use it and keep on cruzin! :D
