herbyjr Jul 29th, 09, 11:05 PM After approximately 20 years in storage, I finally brought my car home again! :hurray: The garage wasn't ready yet, but she fit. Once in the garage, I couldn't help but sit back for a bit and just enjoy the moment.
Even the wife had a smile on her face! I couldn't wait to get back to work on her (the car, not the wife), so I went ahead and took out the seats, carpet and console in an effort to get the musty smell out and check the floor boards. Since this was my first car and I've had it since '82, Everything I found in it was from my past! I found my old insurance verification from 1987. I found an old collection notice from Columbia House Records and tapes. I had ordered Sammy Hagar's "3 Lock Box" and some others, but was apparently slow paying...what can you expect from a high schooler? :o I also found 2 pairs of girls' 80's era earrings, and a single earring. If any of them belong to you, call me, we can work something out. If any of them belong to your wife, uh...sorry, it was a looong time ago!
Anyway, the good news is that all is well with the floor boards and trunk. The trunk has some surface rust but is solid. The floorpan is still as solid as a rock as well.
I'm going to go ahead and thank you all in advance for the help you will be giving me in the future on this car. It really is a cool feeling to be re-building my first car with my two sons as they are gaining an interest in cars too.:D:yes::D:yes:
I'll keep you updated, or you can check in on her at the link below!

okiemark Jul 30th, 09, 05:30 AM Herby: congrats on getting the project going. Glad to see you saved the car. I recently tore out my carpets and seats and found a bunch of coins from the 60's and 70's, ear rings, and an old movie ticket stub. the ticket cost $2.50 from Edwards Theater somewhere in L.A. Keep us posted!

Well, right now I'm leaning toward a crate 383. I've had three different motors in this car over the years, and now I'm really just looking for something that has a warranty. :) Although a full engine build was the plan at one point, I don't want to take the time to do it. It is more important for me to get her back on the road quickly and I'm not very experienced at motor work. I want to have some confidence that it was done right instead of worrying that I did something wrong every time it hiccups.

Well, it looked like this when I got it in 1982.

I was 16 and glad to have her, but also a little aggravated that my parents wouldn't help me buy a car that was in better shape. I drove it, worked on it, tore it up a lot and drove it some more until my second year in college, circa 1987. At that point she was giving me a little trouble here and there and I was a poor college student with other interests so I stored her. I bought a Jeep, but I'd still take her out every now and then. By the time I got married in 1991, the engine was needing overhaul badly and I was broke so I parked her semi-permanently in a garage at my parents' rent house. people broke in and stole engine parts, the stereo, the wheels, etc. Three years ago, I moved her to a storage unit. I've always planned to re-build her some day and that day has finally arrived!

Oh, and now that I'm not a teenager and have realized that my parents really are pretty smart, I'm REALLY happy they decided on a 1st Gen that needed work. I have great memories of working on the car with my dad and I learned a lot while tearing her up and fixing her again.
Spitfire44 Jul 30th, 09, 07:39 AM Looks to be the same color as mine. You going to get the license plate re-issued? That's a keeper.

I'm definitely going to apply for it. A friend told me that he saw it on one of the newer VW Beetles driving around Oklahoma. I'll give it a shot anyway.

herbyjr Jul 30th, 09, 01:32 PM You know, I think the radio knobs I found are from the original stock radio. I'll try to post some close ups if anyone is interested. They are very heavy.
