: Under Cowl.. Painting
chvcmrrcr1969 Jul 30th, 09, 12:18 AM I am in the middle of planning out painting my Camaro so I can be prepared for when the time comes.. I've decided that I am going to Paint the entire car the original Color.. Azure Turquoise Blue. The car originally was a 307 RS car but its had a 350 motor from an old vette for the longest time I could remember in it. I am kinda cloneing a 69 RS/350 SS. I Decided I want black SS hockey stripes on it, the 396 black tail pan, and kinda leaning to a Black grill shroud on it as shown in my Drawing I did in adobe Illustrator

Yes the hockey stripe is off alittle in the drawing but It would be on right on the car..
Now here is my Question.. The area under the upper cowl is usually painted the body color right.. How would it look if the cowl under the panel where metal crosses under the vents and the wiper rods were painted a satin black. is everyone painting the area correctly or has anyone else done this.. I want the area to be less notice able in between the vents there.. Let me know and pics are welcome....
67z28 Jul 30th, 09, 05:14 AM I think it would look fine. I like you like plan to paint mine black.
67conv.cam Jul 30th, 09, 05:47 AM sounds like a good idea... an awsome display..that is on adobe?

okiemark Jul 30th, 09, 10:36 AM Bill, are you talking about the whole "strip" of metal from one quarter panel to the other? the exposed part that goes across the enitre car and butts up against the windshield molding. If so, I'd say no.. not with the black hockey stripe. I's still sticking with yellow for my '68 but LOVE the Azure Turq. saw an episode of "Overhaulin" where they did a Nova in a color close to it. It'll look great on a '69

He's not talking about the cowl panel, just the structure underneath where the wiper mech is housed. Fenders--not quarters. No offense, it's often misnamed.
Musclerodz Jul 30th, 09, 01:14 PM It looks fine body color but in the cowl looks better black because it is very hard to clean and paint that area nice.
chvcmrrcr1969 Jul 30th, 09, 02:33 PM Mark,
I am taking bout the area scott is talking about. the area under the upper cowl. And yeah I love the Azure Turquoise Blue I really can't see My Camaro with any other base Color its been that color since I was a little kid. I thought about black or hugger orange but I still end up seeing blue at the end of the day.
Scott.. thanks for helping
and MuscleRods thanks for your input, cleaning that area would be a pain
Steptoe Jul 30th, 09, 03:05 PM Black... no
Black is not a colour as such...it places like that it is used to create depth, and would look like a dark deep caven at the back of a large blue sea.
IF I was going to do it I would paint colour then paint with a matt black water based tyre black....If i did not like it or just looked wrong it is not hard to water blast the tyre black off.
The Grill the top and bottom pics, the outters are black and not on the 2nd the 1st pic looks far more 'balanced
And personaly I have never liked the hockey stick stripes...the guy who designed those made them look like an after thought, some thing stuck on the side for the boy racers who have stripes for the sake of strip and no consideration to the overall design of the car
Foosevdis a camaro, basically thought the same and tryied to combine the nose and hockey...certinly was an improvement but it still did not 'flow with the overall design lines.
With the suttle side body line that defines the upper and lower body, adding another line complicates and conflicts with the simplisity....If a line was to be put it it should somehow be incorportated with the natural body line...
But hey at the end of the day we are stuck with the orginal factory designers lack of 'eye'....
The beutiy of the 1st gen is it has very clean classic soft curve lines..it is one of the very few modern cars that look good, natural, with 1950s European Le Man stripes, and not putting over the roof was a bit of genus...as are most of the factory colours how they acentuate and complement the natural body lines.
Mark C Jul 30th, 09, 03:22 PM GMs painting specification for the cowl area (the area under the cowl where the wiper arms are) called for the area to be blacked out. Hardly ever observed that way though on production cars.

The second pic is just showing other drawings I have done.. Its more of the original look anyhow.. the first pic is more less what I am working at.. I do agree with you about the Hockey stripes.. at first I drawn the car with out them but I just put the quickly made one because I wasn't sure about leaving the sides with nothing due to the black up front & back.
I don't want the Z28 stripes although they look good I just don't think so on my car.. the only Z28 stripes That go Az Turq is white stripes and I am staying away from white.
I have made my mind up about the area under the upper cowl I just don't want the stuff under there to be noticeable. Kinda clean the look of the lines underneith.
RamAirDave Jul 30th, 09, 10:56 PM If you want less noticeable in that area, go with Azure.

For sure
And this concept is what GM SHOULD have done

Straight-line-69 Jul 31st, 09, 10:47 AM If the front clip is off, I'd go ahead and paint it Azure; the cowl area under the vent grill, and plenum areas on both sides (where the door hinges attach). Then I would satin-black the area where the wiper arms are housed.
That's way GM did it.
These areas aren't noticed until you open either door or the hood. I think a black-out where color should be would look a bit 'low-dollar'.
My opinion, worth what you paid.
