: Basecoat Pricing?
camaroman7d Jul 31st, 09, 01:52 PM Just a ball park question. I'm getting ready to go to the paint store and get my basecoat (already have the clear). I know different colors have different prices. I will be buying PPG one color is a blue mica and the other is white. What are you guys paying per quart with all the chemicals? If you can separate it that's fine too. I haven't bought paint localy in several years and I want to know if I am getting a fair price when I get my quote.
I will need a gallon (sprayable) of blue and 2 quarts (sprayable of the white). Two tone job.
rjp73 Jul 31st, 09, 03:39 PM If you are going to use PPG check out their Omni line. Less expensive than the premium paint but I have had good results with it. It's been awhile since I bought paint, not sure of the prices now.
rjp73 Jul 31st, 09, 03:56 PM I went back to look at my receipts..this was in 2006 though...one quart of Omni MBC in Butternut Yellow was $19.65. As a reference point, I bought a pint of PPG DBC last year in Alpine White for $47.40! I usually use medium reducer at about $20 a gallon in '06.
Vintage 68 Jul 31st, 09, 04:56 PM Royce, unfortunately the prices on paints just took a jump @April/May :(
You can fiqure @ $40~50 a Qrt for most standard 'factory' type colors and the Hardners/Activators @ another $20 or so a Qrt (some will come in Pints, and some don't ...)
Of course the "Specialty colors run more than those - somewhere in the $50~100(+) depending on type and features.
Have you tried calling TCP (858-909.2110) and see what their pricing is like?
They will ship PPG products and their pricing is lower than I can get at local suppliers like "Ned's".
You could also PM 'Martin' and see what he thinks a fair price locally is - he may even have a good contact to help you out
ps: Do you think you'll be making HAN this year?
Give me a call if you get up to Reno during the show
JimM Jul 31st, 09, 05:17 PM John, you must get really special pricing. A gallon of lemans blue DBC cost me $300 five years ago. That's just the gallon of base, hardener and all that was extra.

That's about right. And get shop prices because I'm a business. As stated all colors are different and DBC is top shelf so it's more than DBU. DBC can do something other bases cannot. Different brands...different prices by all manufacturers. Shop around if your on a budget. An associate has R-M on his system. I tried it yesterday on a bike. Nice. Cheaper than PPG. Gets too expensive to stock too many. And my stuff demands HOK too.
Mark C Jul 31st, 09, 06:29 PM Wow your getting some cheap prices, a quart of Cadillac Polo Green Dupont Chromabase cost me 90 bucks this past April, with the activator and hardener it was 135 bucks. The color is roughly equivalent to a Rally green. Its a little darker and is a metallic paint. Add the clear price to that and your talking 200 bucks a quart on the car. Using Chroma Premeir would have easily doubled that.

I was concurring with the prices 5 years ago. I wish I only had to pay $68 for a quart DBC now. I double my purchase on certain supplies when I know the prices are going up. Prices are nuts for supplies today. Disposable cups are crazy. My customers jaws sometimes drop when they hear prices.

If I make it up there it won't be until Friday afternoon. I'll give you a call if I head up there. I'm busting my hump right now trying to get the Skylark in the booth. I'm REAL close.
Thanks for the heads up on TCP and Martin. I will look into both of them.
camaroman7d Jul 31st, 09, 10:19 PM R-M is good stuff and I can get that. I just don't know if my SPI clear will work over polyesther paint (which is what R-M is).
I am not really on a "budget", but I'm not trying to compete for the Riddler Award either. I don't want to cheap out and get an inferior product either. I am open to suggestions, it doesn't have to be PPG, but it does need to be a urethane. The color is Spectra Blue (8M6) and the White is Artic White (W243).
8ballracing Aug 1st, 09, 04:20 AM June of 09 Gallon of DBC base $254.00.......Code 59
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Aug 1st, 09, 05:21 AM I have used Matrix in the past and it has the same ingredients as PPG so I am told my buddy owns a Body Shop and use to put them together on the mixing system. The clear has a much less UV rating and this is where you should go with the good product, the base doesn't mater on the UV rating. Here is a link to Matrix.

Good luck.
I just placed the order with TCP, The blue I chose is $110.70 qt and the white is $85.70 qt. I went with PPG DBC.
Thanks for the input. Hopefuly in the next two weeks I will be posting pictures of a paint job.
Original68fromauntsgarage Aug 2nd, 09, 11:23 AM Cool; I had put that price up for their brand of paint.........
I know PPG is good paint, but I just could not afford over $400.00 per gallon........
I bet you like their site, selection and prices though huh?
Have fun with the paint!
I used their "Fire red pearl & Pure White"

I asked Barry, the owner of SPI if his clear would work over the Diamont basecoat and he said no problem. If you go to the SPI forum there where a bunch of guys using rm base over there. I was going to go that route but I'm just going to go all RM.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Aug 2nd, 09, 01:13 PM It all will work in the mix and match brand but if you have a problem it will be difficult to get a supplier to stand by there product....

If your a diy'er and not a big shop you will be hard pressed to get anyone to stand behind their product. They will say it was user error.
Vintage 68 Aug 3rd, 09, 02:49 PM John, you must get really special pricing. A gallon of lemans blue DBC cost me $300 five years ago. That's just the gallon of base, hardener and all that was extra.
No, that's about right Jim ;)
You can usually fiqure the cost of a Gallon is about equal to the cost of three(3) Quarts - so at @$100 a qrt. for a 'fancier' metallic $300 a gallon is correct.
Seems like all the fancier metallic and "tri-color" stuff is running near a $100 or higher :(
Even GM's paint pricing for some of the "special" colors on new cars reflects the added cost of them - the "Ruby Pearl" color and one of the other color options we considered on the new one we bought was @$500 more from the factory than other "free" colors available ...
I fiqure @ $1000 for paint, cat., reducers and a few other supplies for most jobs
Add to that the cost of primers, fillers and the consumables (sand paper, solvent, rags & ect.) at @ another $500~1000 and you can quickly see why the "Pro's" are getting $7,000 ~ 10,000 (+++) for paint anymore
Like Royce said - if this was for a "Riddler Award" then I could see it, but I like to drive mine :D

Glad to hear you found a good deal
Looking forward to seeing that Buick in something other than primer soon Royce :hurray:
Then it's on to a paint choice for the Nova l:)
See ya at HAN
... They will say it was user error.
Gee - where have I heard that before :D
cuz13 Aug 3rd, 09, 06:41 PM I p\just purchased a gallon of dupont lemans blue for $285 and 37.50 for hardener and and a damaged gallon of basemaker for 65 in Trenton NJ not cheap at all.
prostreet69camaro Aug 3rd, 09, 08:43 PM Royce, glad to see you are finally going to paint the Skylark. Post some pictures of the progress.
