View Full Version : Finally got to do some tuning - new best ET
Eric68 May 21st, 03, 05:07 PM well, I finally got some good weather and a chance to do some real tuning at the track with the new combo. Here's the bottom line:
11.676 @ 115.85 mph with a 1.67 60' time :D :D :D :D :D . Backed it up with a 11.68 run. :D :D These two runs were after some ignition curve and jetting changes.
Stock jetting was too lean on my Demon. Went up to 78's in front kept the 84's in back. Might go to 86's in back later.
Distributor actually had some issues (I'll never buy another Accell HEI). The stop plate pins (the ones the the advance springs go onto) were loose. There's a cheap rivet type thing that holds them to the plate. I tack welded them and it made a big diff in how the car idled (much smoother). Timing mark is much steadier.
I also got my cold air induction piece straightened out. I went with a piece from a company called AIS out of Toronto Canada area. Its actually a ram air setup that goes through the radiator core. Nice piece, but so is the price tag.
Also moved my battery to the trunk - that really helped with the 60' times.
Just thought I'd update those that were interested . . .
1FASTZ May 21st, 03, 05:23 PM Eric,
Congratulations!!!! That sounds great. I bet those times made your day. graemlins/beers.gif
Keep up the good tuning.

MoeSS396 May 21st, 03, 06:24 PM Outstanding!!! That is really awesome!! Im gonna copy that combo! Well maybe Ill just try the same part selection on a 396. Thats one hell of an improvement over the 282S!!!! Nice job graemlins/beers.gif

travis May 21st, 03, 06:38 PM Very  Quite an improvement over last year for sure. What did I predict...11.7's? Flat amazing with a pump gas small block with 3.55's! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Congrats...when are we going to see some 11.5's?
69RS/SS350 May 21st, 03, 07:21 PM Moving your battery to the trunk "really helped your 60 foot times"? My battery is still in the front and I'll play if you want. What did it help, a hundreth? Come on Eric! I congratulate you on your new bests but please! I ran 11.87 on BF Goodrich street tires at 5100 feet the first time I ran my car. graemlins/waving.gif
Toby Keen May 22nd, 03, 12:22 AM Good for you, Eric. I kinda thought some numbers like that were in the cards for you. Great job!

Nice job Eric!
Eric68 May 22nd, 03, 03:25 AM Thanks guys! Not bragging I'm just geeked because I KNEW this combo should run faster than it did early this year.
69RS/SS350, sounds like you have a case of penis envy or something. LOL Its not about being faster than anyone else for me . . . its about beating the clock and getting the most out my combo that I can. So if it helps your ego I'll state now that you have a much faster combo than me . . .
run-a-way-69 May 22nd, 03, 03:37 AM Nice job Eric! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I'd like one of those ram air setups too. Something to put on my Christmas list this year.

67RS502 May 22nd, 03, 04:05 AM I knew there should be some more MPH there!
Thats more like it, and it 60fts well for only 355 gears.
So what cam is in it now?
Whats the weight?
Good job - with 116mph you'll get some 11.40s
Then I want you to do one more thing - uncap it. (with header extensions)
It will go low 11s with tuning, easy!!!
BigRed-L72 May 22nd, 03, 04:28 AM Good to see an improvement!
Nice..... graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Tracy Focht May 22nd, 03, 05:12 AM Congrats Eric! Awesome to see you deeper into the 11's...and with I bet half as much money in your 383 than 69RS/SS350's. graemlins/hurray.gif

Well on yer way! Have fun!
What's the scoop (no pun intended) with that AIS system? I couldn't find any information on them.
Ledfoot May 22nd, 03, 07:39 AM THAT is carrying the mail!!! Congrats on the new times and mph. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Everett#2390 May 22nd, 03, 09:35 AM Congrats !!
Eric68 May 22nd, 03, 12:24 PM HwystarJoe, Here's the website www.ramairbox.com (http://www.ramairbox.com) Just don't order anything online, the online order thing doesn't work - you need to call them anyway to get the right setup for a 1st gen. Forgot the guy's name that helped me out, but he was knowledgable and helpful.
Here's what I ordered: 14x3@80 box, 14AL/Dbase1.5, 2 of 4FLC round duct, 4 feet of AL4 tubing. It consists of a dual snorkel fiberglass air cleaner, spun aluminum top, a 1-1/2" drop base, 4" diameter flexible tubing, and two round ducts that go through the radiator core support. The 1.5" drop base is only necessary for me because I run the Vic Jr with a 1" open spacer.
It barely clears my cowl hood (the flex tubing actually touches in a couple spots) the box itself clears easily. The aluminum tubing connects to the dual snorkels and runs to the core support where it connects to a spot on either side of the rad where I had to cut two 4" diameter holes (kind of scary). The actual air inlet is right behind the turn signal lights in the grill. That's why I had to move the battery to the trunk. Also had to move my overflow can, voltage regulator (removed it since I don't need it anymore) and horn relay (about 1" lower). Not an easy install.
Rafael, the cam is a solid FT Comp 294s with 1.6 rockers. 294* duration, 248* @ 050 lift, 110* LSA, 106* ICL, .560 lift (with 1.6 rockers). Race weight is 3370 lbs (with my big butt LOL). I thought about uncorking it - I could also take off the p/s belt. the belt was worth almost a tenth last time I did it.
ps. Travis - 11.5's I'm not worried about, but you never know ;)

Oh and altitude at our tack is almost exactly 1 mile high. Ain't nothing like being fast and purty!
67w522 May 22nd, 03, 03:41 PM Congrats........11.4 is around the corner. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
HwyStarJoe May 22nd, 03, 04:46 PM Thank you Eric!! I appreciate it!

Toad May 22nd, 03, 07:34 PM Hey Eric, how much you want to come out and tune my car!?! graemlins/thumbsup.gif Good job, but you need to fill some of us in on all the voodoo magic. ;) J/K! I made a ram-air set up like that for my old truck, and it took 2 tenths off! They really help.
Alligator May 23rd, 03, 02:24 AM Congrats on the low ET's!!
I was wondering if you ram-air works better than
a typical cowl induction setup. Anyone
experiment with this?

And it's fast, 'purdy' and the owner doesn't have an 'all mighty' attitude...a complex some others have.......... graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Don't quite see the correlation between speed and purdy...
boodlefoof May 23rd, 03, 05:37 AM Being able to run a good 1/4 mile ET is a beautiful thing... therefore the two are closely related. :D
