Thought you guys could give me some recomendations. I just had a set of pipes made for me through Lemons headers. The primary tubes are 2.125 and I had him weld 3.5 inch collector flanges on the ends. I currently have a set of 3inch ultra flows from my small block, should I go up to a muffler with a 3.5 inch inlet or will the 3s be adequate. Should the head pipes be 3.5 as well? I do not plan on running tail pipes just dumps before the rear housing.
Thanks Rich

Lemon's didn't recommend an exhaust system?
What collector configuration do you have? What is the primary length? I would maintain the collector diameter all the way to the crossover pipe, then add the muffler of your choice.

I had some Lemmon's headers on my 69 but had to remove them with the Wayne Due subframe. They had a 4" collector which I reduced to 3.5" through the "X" pipe and down to 3" for the tailpipes. I now have 2.125" Hooker headers to a 3.5" collector down to 3" exhaust all the way back.

Everyone told me that I'd need a 4"+ pipe with this much power. I still made over 800 RWHP with a 3" set-up and it's noticeably quieter than the 3.5" It may make more power with a larger system, but it dispels the myth that a 3" can't support that much power. Just remember the larger you get, the noise increases at the same time. I'm getting old, I don't like noise!

The collector flange is a standard 3hole 3.5 inch, I do not know the length of the primaries. When I told Dan Lemons what I wanted, I was more concerned about how they would fit the car. Not overly concerned with the length of the collector as far as moving the horsepower and torque curve around.

Jodi,
When you had the original set up did the 3.5 inch reduce at the inlet of the muffler or after the muffler. I still want this system to flow well, if I could use the 3 inch mufflers it would be nice. Will it be noticeably quieter? Will the majority of the noise come from the 3.5 inch head pipes in an X config?
Thanks Rich

Rich,

Yes, mine was originally a 3.5" "X" pipe into 3.5" pipe to 3" mufflers and tailpipes.
I think it's the diameter of the pipes that made it louder. I started with a milder big block and 2.5" "X" and mufflers, then moved up to 3" "X" and mufflers, and finally 3.5" "X" with 3" mufflers. Every increase in pipe diameter brought an increase in noise.

The other thing I noticed with the 3.5" "X" pipe (and the 3") was a real annoying tone at about 2400-2600 rpm; sounded like a boat. Above or below was great. It was not resonance in the car, it was out the pipes. Unfortunately for me I had the 2004R and it would go through that rpm range on every shift. We put the sustem on a friends ProCharged 406 and it doesn't do it. It must have something to do with the engine size difference or possible the difference in engine loading between my automatic and his 6 speed, cause I didn't change a thing when we swapped it to his car. I now have a 3" system with an "H" pipe and the noise is gone (same mufflers and Torque Tech pipes as before).
