The original owner of my car said he remembers 2 Yenko Camaros and 2 Yenko Chevelles there late in the year when the 1970 cars were coming out. The word got out to insurance companies about the 427 cars and they became very expensive to insure. They wanted over $1000.00 per yr for insurance and he could not afford it so ended up selling the car to his friend. The high insurance cost made the last of the 427 Camaros and Chevelles difficult to sell. This is one reason Yenko came out with the 350 LT1 Nova Yenko Deuce in 1970. Byrne Brothers Chevy also sold a lot of 1969 Z/28s. I was told by an employee that they averaged 1 Z/28 a day and always had a lot full of them in every color. Byrne Bro had a 1969 Z/28 house drag car that they ran at local tracks. They were also a large volume hi po parts dealer. The employee remembers many Sat mornings where there were a few 427 crate engines waiting for pick up. here is another old ad where they had "factory 427 Chevelles and Camaros" novamob Aug 11th, 09, 09:54 AM It is widely believed that due to ins co's refusing to insure the 'in house built' 69 Yenko Nova that most of the 37 slated for 427 conversions were never converted. Don was a good businessman and many feel that he woulnd't build 'em unless they were pre-sold. Joe would probably know more that I do about these sYc cars, but you have to be very careful as some appear to have been converted after the fact, by hobbyists. Actual Yenko conversion documentation is exteemly important with these rare/expensive cars. Just because it's on a list doesn't mean it was converted to a 427 by Yenko Chev homerzip Aug 11th, 09, 05:41 PM This site never seems to amaze me, how cool is it that on my '69s original bill of sale from Byrne Bros. Inc. is Bill Barnett's signurature. Just kind of stumbled on this thread, cool. JOE58 Aug 12th, 09, 03:55 PM here is another ad from Byrne Brothers Chevy. This one is very interesting as it states they are taking orders for 1970 454 LS7 460HP Yenko Super Cars. Yenko had planned to special order LS7 Camaros and Chevelles but at some point either Chevy would not allow it or Yenko did not order them. Chevy had a lot of problems in 1970 with the late Camaro and Corvette line, they also had a program to reduce the options. Yenko still did the 1970 350 LT1 Nova on a COPO. The LS7 Camaros and Chevelles, factory rated at 460HP, would have been quite the hot rod production car. Clint_69 Aug 13th, 09, 07:32 AM Joe, I know of at least one 70 454 Yenko Camaro (transplant car) with paperwork. I also know of another original owner who claims he bought a 1970 Yenko Camaro. When I ran the NICB on the second car I have mentioned it came back to Luby Chevrolet so I did not purchase the car. The owner claimed it was an LT1 Camaro. It was an SS350 body. Both cars actually had the exact same Yenko emblem placement. Both cars are fairly untouched. JOE58 Aug 14th, 09, 07:11 AM On the 1969 Yenko 427 Nova; Vinnce E. who is the original guy that was documenting the Yenkos, has said there were 37 Novas listed, 30 427s and 7 396. Vinnce has original paperwork from Yenko and did magazine articles in the 1980s. His numbers are still used today on the other Yenko cars. I don't remember any 1970-71 Yenko built Camaros but they may have been some built for customers or had 454 upgrade as part of warrentee/repair. Yenko was working on a 1972 Yenko Super Z with 400 cu in engine. A prototype was built and tested by a car magazine but did not go into production. 98blackburb Aug 14th, 09, 03:25 PM Nice catch. Where did you find the add? COPOLOCO is correct David that was it................... http://www.detroithorsepower.com/forum/index.php?topic=35.msg214 98blackburb Aug 14th, 09, 03:27 PM Hey does the phone number still work... Inc. is Bill Barnett's signurature. Just kind of stumbled on this thread, cool. This Site Amazes me at the talent and knowledge it has of Camaro's........... THANKS TEAM CAMARO:beers: novamob Aug 17th, 09, 07:43 AM Joe, while it may be true that Vince has some sort of documentation to support those figures he apparently doesn't like to share. I have spoken to Warren D about the 69 Yenko Nova in-house conversions and he recalls very, very few...like a couple. He also told me that this has been discussed with others that worked at Yenko with him at the time and they confirm Warren's recollection. Sorry to take this thread offtrack, but I still believe the insurance companies issues with the 69 Nova kept more from being converted and this information is supported by somebody who was there, working on them. JOE58 Aug 19th, 09, 07:23 AM Warren has some interesting stories on some 1969 Yenko Novas and he has some great documentation from Yenko Chevy but he does not have complete inventory sheets. Vince E has the most complete inventory sheets and his numbers have been used for 25 years. I am not sure exactly what Vinnce has on the 1969 Yenko Novas but he did state that he found orders for 37 1969 L78 Novas and said 30 were converted to 427 Yenko Novas. If I was a buyer on a 1969 427 Yenko Nova, I would want to see some documents that show the conversion was done by Yenko as a new car. here is a pic of part of an article on a 427 Yenko Nova 1968Motion427SSNova Aug 19th, 09, 08:14 AM Joe,Wouldn't the person who worked at Yenko as a mechanic back in the day doing the actual conversions be someone to contact too? Who really knows ,but having owner history, vintage pictures and copies of both Warren D's info and Vince Emme's info would be the best. How old is that Magazine article on Vince? JOE58 Aug 19th, 09, 01:11 PM Dan, this article is 1991 Vince has had the Yenko documents since the early 1980s. |
